The Weekly Gazette - 05-27-2012
(May 21 to May 27, 2012)
Welcome dear readers to the latest issue of the Weekly Gazette! Here in the Gazette, we give you the news in brief of what occurred in the past week as well as provide any news happening in Save-Point itself
Feedback and Suggestions PK8 thought the Subject Length is too short, making replies to threads with long subject names through quick reply impossible. It didn't take long before Kore was on top of it.
And Taylor found a link that was wrong in the Forum Scripting List, finding an error where Geso Chisku's Visual Equip link was actually heading to another thread. DerVVulfman thanked Taylor for the notice and fixed it right away. But it confused DerVVulfman how the error came about as he said he merely copied the actual link rather than retyping it. He also took care of yamina-chan's previously discussed error, but seemed to have difficulty tracing the script by Kyonides. It confused him all the more as he found the actual script topic in a trash folder and the thread labeled as a 'guest' account's submission. He thinks the only possible answer to how the thread was temporarily lost was one given by Jacket, that a change in hosts could be the culprit. With that, yamina-chan thanked DerVVulfman for taking time to find the script.
Occasions This week, we got to celebrate the birthday of Lemonairable.
General Chat Do you ever want to know What's on the mind of your fellow members? After finding a youtube of a 24 year old girl wanting to get married to Alex, her Apple Laptop, Olivia felt like naming her laptop Aster. While his computer was messed up, Kain Nobel passed time away by playing Infamous. He felt a little depressed with a sense of general boredom. Though his life is on track with a few major accomplishments, he'd been having odd thoughts on how to spice up his life for just the experience. yamina-chan just received a pair of new SNES controllers making her current tally of controllers five, making her wonder what to do with that many. She's waiting for a day where she and her sister can start playing Secret of Mana for the SNES and wonders what other good games are out for that console and the Sega Saturn. She's been on a tight budget with health insurance and her schooling starting soon, so it would be a while for any new games to be showing up. Hybrida has been trying to figure out what comic book story to release to Save-Point, as he's stuck with legal issues, violence and language content in some of his works. He narrowed it down to one entitled Psion Fighter, but he acknowledged that he's slow when it comes to artwork. He also admitted that he should be working more on his RPGMaker project. And Kore has sleep deprivation on his mind. Meanwhile, PK8 felt a little foolish as he forgot to include specifying ranges into one of his scripts. While that went on, MetalRenard discoverd a site called Zamplify that opened only this past week. Within the new site, he was ranked #1 enjoying his moment of fame where artists can share their music and fans can get it for free. But not all was good as Pherione's hot water went Explody, only letting him enjoy cold showers. KasperKalamity however seems to like them, and mentioned that Hugh Jackman was said to take them before filming scenes in X-Men: Wolverine. Rosyposy noticed that there's been activity in the Staff forum's version of the 'On your mind' thread, and wondered if the staff were talking about new codes for the forum or about boobs. DerVVulfman popped in to jokingly say both; popping at work on a Saturday.
PK8 showed up, and posted a youtube from L1Games's who talked about New vs Used games where the retailer (L1Games) in the video was highliy critical about the new Video Game industry. Hybrida saw the video, and it made his day and wished that the video would publically air for every gamer to see. Taylor laughed at the thought that selling used games was illegal, citing stores like EBGames or GameStop doing it regularly and Ace totally agreed with L1Games in all his points. However, DerVVulfman said he laughed when L1Games said the gaming industry did things no other industry does, contradicting the retailer with his own examples. He agree with L1Games about the legal rights to sell video games like other media content, but said that the retailer will really hate learning that Sony's next gaming console is going to be download content only. That in itself made a bit of a stir when Taylor read DerVVulfman's comment, feeling that download only games was retarded. And Hybrida things that Sony is gong to perish if the upcoming Playstation 4 console does that, as they almost did with the PS3. He figures Nintendo may bring the gaming industry back if it all goes south. yamina-chan couldn't believe what she read wondering who came up with the idea that even home-console games only offered a license to play rather than the whole game. Taylor prefers to have physical ownership of his gaming content, limited internet or otherwise. Be that as it may, the game he's playing right now, Steam, Taylor thought has no DRM (Digital Rights Management... or Digital Restriction Management as some call it) other than necessary updates.. But MetalRenard pointed out that Steam, requiring him to log in to play, is DRM. Ace brings up the issue that he'd want to have the actual game if he spends his money rather than a license, and that the game not be crippled so he can actually finish playing. He also feels that the PlayStation 4's Download Content Only feature is a suicide mission. Perhaps the PSP Go was a mistake with it being download only, but having the PlayStation 4 duplicate the error was just ignorance.
PK8 made a bit of progress trying to find the other student in a certain college using RMVX/, though he still hasn't a clue who the student is. For those who don't know, he found a copy of RPGMaker VX on a college PC, and found that the program was still available. So this past week, PK8 made a project in the engine plainly visible with a map saying 'HEY YOU", and giving the student an invitation to the forum.
And PK8 thought it would be good to let everyone know about the contest called National Game Development Month (or NaGaDeMo for short). Taking place in the month of June, It is something similar to November's National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) where you enter a month long contest to produce a rough draft novel. A spin-off concept run by a different group of people, you attempt to develop your game starting June 1st all the way through to June 30th. Of course, PK8 provided a link to the site hoding the contest within his topic.
Development Discussion It is always interesting to find out What's up with our RMers, and right now KasperKalamity noticed he spent another week without working on Arbor's Eve, his game. He's puzzeled why his motivation to work on it deminishes when he's at home. Taylor has been having issues with fonts he's been using as some lack crucial elements like punctuation, having to stick with one he's using for now. Zackwell has been reorchestrating the RPGMaker XP's RTP music for kicks, and both yamina-chan and Taylor enjoyed his arrangements, both noting the strings section gave the music a nice touch. MetalRenard also enjoyed the music, reminiscing about his own thread with about 30 remixed RMXP RTP tracks of his own. What was once a game made with RPGMaker 2003 is now a Visual Novel. But Taylor has been considering turning his project back into a puzzle horror game, though he does want a narrative or story like feel to the game. Taylor's considering the use of an ABS system, but he's also waiting to see if anyone replies to his Green Dragon sprite request. DerVVulfman popped in and mentioned he has a hair cut resource request of his own, and PK8 mentioned he'd probably start scripting more system within 10 hours from posting. Happy that he got his job system addon working properly, buddysievers says he can now start balancing his game. And all Hybrida's been doing is making custom windows for his RPGMaker XP project. Meanwhile, DerVVulfman continued to work on his crafting system and said he's gotten some feedback on the main character of his demo. And Kain Nobel got over his depression, though he's still bored. Taylor thought about diagonal movement within the RPGMaker XP environment, noting that it seemed faster than the normal horizontal/vertical movement. DerVVulfman noted how diagonal movement just combined both horizontal and vertical actions together, but also mentioned it could be fixed if he planned to use pixelmovement rather than a tile-based system. Meanwhile, yamina-chan got disappointed finding that the Grandia Menu lookalike she found was for RPGMaker VX rather than for RPGMaker XP which she is currently using. At the same time, she ran into difficulty with both hers and her sister's scanners not working on her PC, preventing her from scanning some battlers. So rather than continue, she branched off to work on a RPGMaker 2003 thank-you project for a little while.
Upcoming Projects MarianFrae posted plenty of updates to her game, Magin this week. The world information has been changed as the mythology and backgrounds have been swirling around in her head for a while, boasting as much back material as the Silmarillion (the backstory and mythos behind Lord of the Rings). She's also worked visually on the Comeley sisters and have announced that Brent had done a magnificent job on the game's sprites, thanking MetalRenard for suggesting him as an artist. And with that, MarianFrae posted some sketches of characters such as Russel, a man wearing modern day clothing such as a collared shirt, though the broadsword he has against his shoulder may seem out of place. Also posted were shots of Blaize, a guy with short black hair and a smile wearing a pair of shorts looking like he's ready for the beach. And lastly, Alicia who looks to be at home hunting during bow season, wearing jeans and a padded vest over her shirt, her long blond hair flowing past her shoulders.
General Support Posting a picture for an example, Kureshin wanted to know how to insert 3D shapes with Surfaces in the mode 7 script by Shining Advances. He came up with an idea and the picture he posted showed a box, but it was plain and had no textures and wondered if a script to add the textures could be possible. Taylor pointed out that a Mode7 script with that feature already existed, though he was curious about 'Shining Advances' and recalled that there was a Mode 7 system before MGC's.Meanwhile, MetalRenard responded comically in kind, cheering on MGC. Kureshin knows about MGC's system, but needs the system to be able to create taller objects such as buildings. In that, Taylor told him to wait as he's going to add the ability to change the maximum hight in bump mapping. Of course, he could use a different engine that supports 3D. PK8 remembered that Meustrus made a Mode7 system once, and DerVVulfman replied that it was the first Mode7 system. DerVVulfman also recalled that he saw someone posted an edit of Meustreus's system without permission and got a hold of him to get things settled.
And felicalexa was curious if someone knew how to make a Tileset, having tried crafting some tiles with Corel Draw, posting a few screen shots. MetalRenard saw the inquiry and asked him a few questions, such as if he was using an HMode7 system and whether he was loading the tileset in as an autotile or visa versa.
RGSS Support Lightning struck twice. Last week, buddysievers said for the second time that he needed a Script Addon Bugfix for his Job system as the first bug fix didn't work. But this week, he once again fixed his problem.
Tutorials For all who make map event systems, PK8 wrote a tutorial on how to Make a "Wait Until Button Input" though he rarely writes tutorials as he considers himself terrible at explaining things. Within his thread, he hopes to teach how to use the 'Wait until Input' system, useful for evented cutscenes or the like.
Scripts Database For RPGMaker XP, RPGMaker VX and RPGMaker VXAce, PK8 released his Move During Messages script, a system that allows the characters to move on the fieldmap while the message window is still up. It was later updated to allow the user specify ranges in an array and streamlined tye system that prevented the system from working on certain maps.
PK8 also made a system for both RPGMaker VX and VXAace that completely Disables Dash so you don't have to check every map's properties.
Meanwhile, PK8 bumped his Switchless Common Events to version 1.1 as he ditched some redundant features, compressed the code and made a version for RPGMaker VXAce.
And in responce to a bug that Taylor found in the RPGMaker XP version of ccoa's UMS, DerVVulfman penned the Universal Message System Cancel Choices Fix. The patch corrects a problem in the 'Show Choices' window when the user set up the system to branch out to a set of code if the player hit Esc/Cancel. It doesn't affect any windows with more than 4 choices as the UMS had no problems beyond the default 4.option settings.
And thanks to PK8 noticing that the revised Eta version works with RPGMaker VXAce, DerVVulfman bumped the View Range topic after changing the prefix flag to reflect all three editor systems.
Script Requests Having some problems with window editing, buddysievers asked if anyone could help him with a VX Window Conversion, changing the way one of the windows in his RPGMaker XP project to look like a screen from RPGMaker VXAce. He supplied the code he's using and mentioned the features he wants displayed, including that it's to work with his Job Stats Modifier script.
Spirited Wind Olivia posted her list of the Feature Implementation she is working on in her Spirited Wind forum, listing how features such as her Day Night system and Fishing systems are halfway done and the home customization system is nearly complete. Spirited Wind is the first forum in the newly dubbed Project Forums board, both her own personal RPGMaker VXAce game and a test subject on how to emplement the same said Project Forums board. It confused DerVVulfman whether the game was a re-do of Crystal Legends, but Olivia mentioned that the forum's MMORPG will return. Pherione too wondered why it wasn't placed under the Games Development board within the Current Projects forum and wondered more about the game other than just the features. But the only thing on MetalRenard's mind was "Does it have cats?" Yes, there will be cats among a variety of pets. And Olivia mentioned that the new forum will be for specific projects, saying that she can be contacted if a member wants to know if his game is special enough to be placed here.
Well, that's it for this week.

Personal standpoint...
"I believe in giving people options, not 'forcing' only one script or system upon everyone. Adaption is key, not specialization. Overspecialize, and you breed in weakness."
