How about... a trip to a) outer space or b) the deepest reaches of the ocean (assuming you aren't crushed by the pressure)?

Japanese cartoon, there are some good American cartoons, but for the most part Japanese stuff pulls me in far more. I have spent many a weary night waist deep in an anime that I couldn't put down.
