Devil May Cry. GoW is a fundamentally better game but at least I can trust Dante not to rape the planet's ecological system until it explodes with a massive revenge hard-on.

Seriously, by the third game Kratos has become way worse than Ares...

Fire Emblem. Terrific game with a good story and interesting gameplay.
