Maps and screenshots thread - aerendyll - 12-29-2008

Most of you know what these threads are, but I'll give a short introduction for those who don't.

This is a thread to post images of maps and screenshots which you want to get criticised by other members. This is meant to be constructive criticism, so don't just say something is bad - tell the author of the map WHY it is bad. Or why it is good.

Rules: (to avoid the thread from becoming messy)
1) Don't post an image after another without criticising the image(s) of the previous poster. Everyone wants feedback, just like you.
2) Always explain WHY you have your opinion about the map of someone else. If you think it's perfect without any mistakes, say so too. Don't just say it's good.
3) Don't post more than 3 images which need feedback per post (including links to).
4) Put large images in spoilers and link to images that are wider than 1000 pixels rather than directly posting the image.

Now that's said and done, let's see what you can do!

You kind of cheated in here. This is a video. ;3

I quite like the way you can switch "worlds", but I wonder what graphical style you're going to use... It seems a bit hard to use high definition tilesets for this.

Made with VX, yes. The tilesets are so limited and stupid, you can't do ANYTHING interesting with it! :o[/sarcasm]

TBH, I really can't work with the VX tilesets like you could. One small problem I have with your map would have to be the lack of a side shadow where the waterfalls would come out.

My platformer is going to use a simplistic style. Black squares (floor), grey checkered boxes (walls), etc. P:

Can't see your vid on this comp Punk. Probably my browser's fault :\

Aerendyll, that's a very interesting map design! More creative than most I see. A couple areas don't seem aligned perfectly height-wise, but that's a problem most people won't see outside critique threads. Great job!

The height is one of the biggest problems with this one. >_> I didn't pay too much attention to it because I found the overall atmosphere more important. :x

The shadow is fixed right now. I had to use events for some shadows since VX lacks a third layer and I added these later on.

And yes, I love the VX RTP because it is VERSATILE. You can do so much with the tiles, but people often don't see it. :( I hope this one inspires others to experiment more! ^^

@aerendyll
Beautiful Map though there are height/alignment issues, you won't really notice unless your looking for it.

For your layer issue, you could try Dargor's Map Layer script. your essentially mapping another layer on a separate map from what I understand.

Now for the screenshots!
Status Window 1 & 2
Old Skill Rank Window
Eventually it will have Elemental Resistances beside each rank and the characters
traits (More or less Auto Abilities the player will have) in the empty space below
Outdoors Mapping
Indoor Mapping
Edit: A work in progress of the first area in my game.
Everything is still subject to change but it's not all that bad for a modern tileset.

EVOLUTION!
Might have to start using spoilers for the images >.>
