Generator Ideas... - Kain Nobel - 12-14-2013 I remember my buddy PK8 was obsessed with generators, and for good reason; to make life easier. Granted, there are some things out there that, for better or worse, already exist (or used to) but there are others that I think would be truly useful! Wall Generator The idea is pretty simple; just take a basic wall and ceiling tile, use it to generate all the corners and angles needed for a tileset. A color scale algorithm would be used to create tile-by-tile elevation differences. Roof Generator Similar to the Wall Generator, it would take a single basic roof tile and create a whole roofing set RMXP style. Of course if you were to make something like the Mining Town or Post Town roofs, it would require a little extra editing, but the system would at least do half the job for you. Color Profile Generator Now what this would do is take a normal object, run a best-match algorithm to get a reduced color vibrancy palette, then replace it's entire color profile with that of a designated palette. Here are some examples, profiles being "Gold", "Burnt" and "Frozen", each at 6 colors. lol Aluxes got Goldfingered ;D Auto-Tile Generator It would take a basic 2 tiles, apply a designated pattern, then *BOOM!* instant auto-tile! The template patterns could consist of 3 or more colors, the darkest representing edging, the lighter representing the tile as it gets closer to the 'main' tiles, and pure white being the completely transparent portion. Texture Generator I had to manually apply this, but a texture generator would take a basic tile + any other graphic, and replace it's vibrancy profile with a texture palette. (It'd work similar to the Color Profile Generator, but with entire textures instead of a palette.) Here is an example... (I accidentally grabbed two different mountains, but that should still give you an idea...) Got any other suggestions or ideas? Go for it! I don't necessarily know if I'll make these generators or not, as this is just a list of ideas, but hopefully it'll influence somebody to develop these time-saving tools for us! Who knows, your tool could even be implemented into the ReGaL editor. Also, I come up with these ideas when spriting some mundane things, so I'll revisit this thread to post more as they come. I'd love to try to whip one up one day! In fact, maybe I will once I find the time and some serious motivation to just straight up script things. Don't hold your breath on it though because I never seem to finish a lot of what I start, but I'm hoping that I can! Dude, you should design more Autotile Masks. This is the one generator I'm seriously looking forward to wanting to work on now. Bookmarked. |
