If you're looking for 2d composite sprites (paperdolling with layers) I say shell out the few dollars and get Game Character Hub. It's really worth it. Alternatively, there's a great editor for RMMV called Schlengen's (spelling) Extended Character Creator. really good stuff there... Of course, for flat sprites that are not aliased, DerVVUlfman's ChargenEX is the best.
