Unfortunately, the MIDI playback in XP (at least) is not so good, taking several seconds of initialization to start up. MV doesn't even support .midi files! Here's a free and open source tool you can use to convert MIDI songs into OGG file format Keppy's MIDI Converter. You'll need SF2, SF3, or SFZ format soundfonts in order to convert, though.
