Just a little update on my progress. I have been working on the scenes following the end of the demo as well as tinkering with the gameplay mechanics. Right now I am toying with the idea of making the defend command recover HP/MP. Its not by much and there is only a chance that it will work but it adds a nice dynamic and makes the defend command a much more tactical option. Perhaps there will be a purple materia later in the game that enhances the chance of the recovery working, as well as the amount that will be recovered.
Limit break progression has been reduced greatly making battles feel more tactical and less dependent on luck. Here is a screenshot of a scene I just finished, its your introduction to the main female character in the game and perhaps Noas love interest later on. Does anyone have any ideas for a name for her? Right now she has the working title of Saya but its far to generic and does not really fit. Final Fantasy names often have other meanings such as aeris or arith being the modification of a star sign name and Terra being latin for earth. Or was that greek for earth? Anyways if anyone has any ideas let me know.

I guess if you want to go with the FF style of naming, you should consider the character and what they 'mean' insofar as the game. In FF7, Tifa was a variant of Terra and she was pretty much down to Earth while Aeris/Aerith was more of the one with an otherworldly touch... hence choosing a variation of a star sign.
I know you don't want to give anything away, so it really comes down to what you want the character to symbolize and draw a name from that. The more obscure the better. Remember that Biggs and Wedge (homages to Star Wars) have been in a number of FF games since the old SNES days.

I've played this demo in the past and it's really well done. Your scenes are really well done and the battlesystem and use of ripped battlebacks, music really gives it a Final Fantasy atmosphere. That, and you have GubiD as your lead programmer, so I will keep my eye on this game! Any progress since your original post?

Something of a long overdue update.
My laptop bricked sometime ago and I stopped work on the project for a while. I got it recovered recently however and have begun working again. I lost a lot of stuff after the demo release so I am more or less retracing my steps and trying to get back where I was before. The materia system is going and in its place a new ability system that is unique to the game. Unfortunately the demo is down for the time being but I will upload an updated version as soon as I can.

We find that particular forum is a nice way to ensure no one necro's your thread while you're away... and only 'you' and staff could see it. Good for repairs too. New demo? Kewl.

No joke -- I found this on another forum just this morning and loved the artwork ^_^. I, too, am doing a FF fangame....*blush* but mine isn't nearly as nice.
