i tried larping today. i'd be fine with it if the other people who were involved were cooler. when i saw them in the park last week, they were doing some sort of foam-rubber combat, and it looked cool, so i came back today. big mistake. they were all perfectly nice, but they were all waaaay too into the role play aspect of it. i sit down and we start talking, which eventually leads to hundreds of different stats and rules and attack types and magic and alchemy and the whole time i'm thinking "who has time?" i fenced in highschool, and i hung out with a group of SCA people, who turned out to not really be my 'scene' so i enjoy the combat aspects of it, and appreciate the practice it takes to get good at it. the problem i had with sca was that they were really REALLY into their rules and staying "in period" and a hundred other things that just boiled down to them being jerks... these larp-folk are just really REALLY into all the stats and magic. i should have known i wouldn't fit in when i saw the giant dungeons and dragons guidebook..... they were perfectly nice, it's just not for me.
