tech companies buy each other so that they can create a larger conglomeration of ownership over technology. once the physical world becomes less and less of a factor in our daily lives, and technology replaces human interaction (think "autistic" basement dwellers) then these companies will have complete control over what we do, what we know, and how we interact. imagine of google bought photobucket, deviant art, imageshack, and every other image hosting service/site. they would 'own' online digital photography. everything you post would become their property, and you would have to agree to their terms of service and end user license dealies.
