Humans (including Neanderthals) have been known to have hunted mammoths (and Homo Sapiens even used their bones to build houses). The scientific world is divided as to whether the mammoth species were killed off by the humans (overhunted), climate change during the Holocene or a combination thereof. Or a disease.
As for consuming mammoth meat, the Homo Erectus already had mammoth on the menu, but it's unclear if they actually hunted or scavenged.
