Impractical does not mean it's not been done.
There have been actual weapons and armor in the past that were unbalanced and inefficient in some ways, Remember knights in medieval battles in their heavy platemail and everyhting? Quite a few had it in such a way that were not able to seat themself on a horse without help.
In case of these oversized swords, they are based on ZanbatÅs, which actually did exist. Maybe not quite as huge, but huge none the less.
