Agreed - post apocalytic worlds are cool in theory but sucky in practice.
I'd love to live in the world you can glimpse in Iain M. Banks' sci-fi novels, "The Culture". They're a super advanced almost utopian civilisation. Very nice prospects...
Humans live for 400 years then they can choose to become machines. Resources are not lacking at all. Money does not exist because nobody wants for anything. The hard work is done by dumb machines while "Minds", incredibly smart, sapient machines, roam the universe and research to continue to advance the civilisation.
Humans can still do jobs such as teaching, art/writing/music etc and other humanities, travel, building and design, meeting other civilisations, all that. Still plenty to do.
So exciting. :3
