I guess if you want to go with the FF style of naming, you should consider the character and what they 'mean' insofar as the game. In FF7, Tifa was a variant of Terra and she was pretty much down to Earth while Aeris/Aerith was more of the one with an otherworldly touch... hence choosing a variation of a star sign.
I know you don't want to give anything away, so it really comes down to what you want the character to symbolize and draw a name from that. The more obscure the better.
Remember that Biggs and Wedge (homages to Star Wars) have been in a number of FF games since the old SNES days.
