I love Tom Clancey's (RIP) novels. They jump around a lot. One minute you're reading about Jack Ryan in Dubai, the next minute you're reading about some nonsense in Moscow, then you're back in Dubai with JR, then you've been shifted to the US with some other dudes doing other things. If any other writer did this, it'd be a crime, but TC turned this into an art and it all comes together splendidly in the end.
Actually, I don't think there is any other way to write a Clancey novel, to write it differently simply wouldn't work well, it would probably serve for a terrible excursion. Everything is relative, even if it seems pointless at first. That surveillance plane doing a figure 8 racetrack pattern above Egypt? We'll come back to that, but first...
