HEY HEY JAY RAY #5
Ten Second Tim!

Tim: "Wow, you're the great hero, Joster! I wish that one day I could be like you!"

You: "Why thank you I'm honored..."

 - an hour later -

Tim: "Wow, you're the great hero, Joster! I wish that one day I could be like you!"

You: "... Thanks?"

 - two days later -

Tim: "Wow, you're the great hero Joster! I wish that one day I could be like you!"

You: " (is this kid trolling me?)"

a week later, in another game...

Tim: "Wow, you're the great hero Allizabeth! I wish that one day I could be like you!"

You: "Why... thank you, I'm honored..."

Have you ever ran across ten-second Tim, the game NPC with literally no memories longer than the ten seconds it took for you to read what he said? We all have. many 2d RPGs are chuck FULL of ten-second Tims, and we have got to stop this epidemic once and for all!... What should we do?

Set up Tim and every other NPC with a pre-set pool of a few hundred phrases they can all borrow from, and just randomize their dialog?

Keep tons of dialog for everyone, but make it unique for any specific NPC?

Or try the specific conversation dialogue approach, where you have to answer his statement, and that statement makes another one, which you then respond to, which he then responds to, like a real conversation...
