Why do people make fangames?

well, that, and...
it's easier to make a game if you don't have to make your own characters. people who wont go through the effort to make their own characters, storylines, character development, relationship webs... well, they usually won't go through the effort to make a good game. So while fangames by default aren't bad, the crowd they attract make bad games.
