I use REAPER as a host (or DAW, Digital Audio Workstation). It's very powerful (I was seriously impressed by it) and cheap at just 40$ (you won't find cheaper). Its low price doesn't mean it isn't as good either, it's comparable to the 500$+ software. I love it.
As for instruments, I use free VSTis (virtual instruments) which I found online in various places and some that I bought, like Native Instrument's "Session Strings". I bought that one because I couldn't find a single good string orchestra for free.
Do you know how to set up this kind of software? It's a little difficult at first so if you need help just ask questions, I'll answer.
EDIT:
I forgot, I also play guitar so any guitar in my songs is actually recorded. You can't find good guitar virtual instruments, even if you pay for it.
