Well, you are the artist. Your look on the image will awlays be diffrent Xb And it really is just a vage connection in the first place.
As for your worry in regards to coloring: this is something I am familiar with.
What I used to do was making a copy of the image, either by tracing or with a copy machine. As a backup, so to speak, and only then I would do the propper lineart, regardless of if I wanted to finish it handdrawn or scan it and color it on the PC.
I definately had the same fear of 'I don't want to ruin this'.
