USA Elections: The Aftermath
Pence
Quote:Former Vice President Mike Pence congratulated President-Elect and former President Donald Trump and Vice President-Elect and Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) on their win.
In a post on X, Pence wrote that he and his wife, Karen Pence, would be praying for “all those in authority” and encouraged Americans to join them “in praying” for the “incoming President, Vice President, and elected officials at every level.”
“The American people have spoken and Karen and I send our sincere congratulations to President-Elect Donald Trump and his family on his election as 47th President of the United States,” Pence wrote. “We also send our congratulations to Vice President-Elect J.D. Vance and his family on his election as Vice President of the United States.”
Pence also congratulated the “newly elected members of the Republican majorities in the United States Senate and the House of Representatives,” adding that they “look forward to their efforts to renew American security, prosperity and a respect for life.”
Pence’s words congratulating Trump and Vance come after he had previously stated during an interview on Fox News Channel’s “The Story,” that he would not be endorsing Trump in the 2024 presidential election, noting that there were “profound differences between” the two of them on various issues. Pence added that he had watched Trump walk “away from” their commitment to deal with the national debt and the “commitment to the sanctity of human life.”
During a recent event in New Hampshire, Pence revealed that he would not be endorsing Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential election, according to WMUR9 ABC News. Pence explained that he was “a conservative” and “could never vote” for Harris or her vice presidential running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D).
Trump made the greatest comeback, winning the presidential election after he secured a path to 270 votes in the Electoral College.
Zelensky
Quote:Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky beat most world leaders to offer his congratulations to Donald Trump, using his message to apparently express hope that things would continue unchanged between Ukraine and the United States of America.
While messages of congratulations are now beginning to flow in from leaders around the world — and in many cases, as in 2016, through “gritted teeth” — among the very first to react to Former President and President-elect Donald Trump as his victory in the 2024 became apparent was Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky. Publishing a statement, the Ukrainian called the victory “impressive” but immediately launched into discussion on “the Victory Plan”.
Promoted by President Zelensky around the capitals of the Western nations in recent months but with a notable exception generally only receiving a lukewarm reception from leaders, the Victory Plan was later publicly unveiled as an itemised list of longstanding Ukrainian demands presented in a new format. At the heart of the document is Ukraine’s request for an “unconditional invitation right now” for the country to join NATO, something which has repeatedly been rejected for as long as it remains at war.
The rush to embrace Trump and make a wishful statement — which has long been a Ukrainian diplomatic tactic, with mixed success — comes after Trump has repeatedly made clear the sprawling Ukraine war would rapidly end in peace if he won the election. The once and future President told Breitbart News in August that if elected, he would negotiate peace between Kyiv and Moscow before he was even officially sworn in.
As reported of his conversation with Breitbart News in August:
Trump said he knows Russian president Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, and believes he can negotiate peace to end the “death” and “destruction” if elected again on Nov. 5.
“I know both heads of the countries,” Trump said. “I know President Putin very well. I want to see the death stopping. There’s death and there’s destruction. They are destroying the whole fabric of a certain part of the world. I want to get it negotiated, and get it done.”
… “You look at the heritage of the country—the cities are mostly knocked down,” Trump said, describing Ukraine. “They’re flattened. They’re just totally flattened. Have you ever seen some of these cities? There’s not a building standing. The country has been devastated. So I want to get it solved and I will be able to get it solved. And I’d like to do it before I get to the White House after I’m president-elect.”
Putin
Quote:Russian President Vladimir Putin won’t join the chorus of global leaders congratulating Donald Trump on his historic election win, his spokesman stating U.S.-Russian relations are “at their lowest point in history”.
Political leaders from across Europe sent letters of congratulations to once and future President Donald Trump on Wednesday, some out of a sense of genuine pleasure and others in a bid at damage control, but the Kremlin says President Vladimir Putin takes no pleasure from the news.
Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told domestic press on Wednesday that he was not aware that Putin had any plans to offer congratulations, remarking: “Let’s not forget that we are talking about an unfriendly country that is directly and indirectly involved in a war against our state… It is practically impossible to make relations between the United States and Russia any worse as they are already at their lowest point in history”.
Peskov said in further remarks that Russia would judge its feeling towards the incoming administration, due January 2025, on “statements on issues that are on our agenda, when we receive them, and on his first concrete steps”, but stated that Russia remained open to a “constructive dialogue” with the United States. Indeed, Russia has offered a ‘dialogue’ over the Ukraine war several times in the past, but with conditions attached so extreme Moscow will have known full well nobody would possibly take them up on the offer.
While Russia played it cool, with Speaker of the upper house of the Russian Parliament Valentina Matviyenko remarking “I don’t think that the results of the election in the United States can have any dramatic or fundamental significance for us”, it is nevertheless the case Russia’s war in Ukraine is very much in Trump’s sights.
Donald Trump had told Breitbart News earlier in the election he wanted to bring peace to Ukraine quickly — possibly before he even got the keys to the White House — remarking “I want to see the death stopping”...
Quote:The Kremlin expressed very mild optimism on Wednesday for possible improvements in relations between the United States and Russia under the second Trump administration, although the Russians remained skeptical that Trump can deliver on his promise to make peace in Ukraine.
“Let’s not forget that we are talking about an unfriendly country that is directly and indirectly involved in a war against our state,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, referring to U.S. opposition to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Asked if relations between Russia and the United States might deteriorate under Trump, Peskov replied, “It is almost impossible to worsen them further, relations are at their historically lowest point. What happens next will depend on the next U.S. leadership.”
Peskov insisted Russian President Vladimir Putin remains open to “constructive dialogue based on fairness and equality.”
“At the moment, the U.S. administration is diametrically opposed, and what will happen in January – we will see,” he said.
“It would be logical for the next U.S. president, whoever he or she may be, to focus on solving own country’s problems and not looking for adventures tens of thousands of miles away from the U.S. coast,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday.
“In general, it makes no difference for Russia what the election outcome will be, given the two-party consensus that emerged in the United States regarding the confrontation toward our country,” she said.
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who has threatened to plunge the world into nuclear war for a variety of reasons, and who predicted last weekend that Trump would be assassinated by the Western military-industrial complex if he tries to end the Ukraine conflict, hoped the second Trump administration could be bad news for Ukraine.
“Trump has one useful quality for us: as a businessman to the core, he mortally dislikes spending money on various hangers-on and stupid hanger-on allies, on bad charity projects and on voracious international organizations,” Medvedev said.
“The question is how much Trump will be forced to give to the war. He’s stubborn, but the system is stronger,” he said.
Xi Jinping
Quote:Chinese President Xi Jinping said Thursday Beijing and Washington must find a way to “get along” in a message to US president-elect Donald Trump, state media reported.
Trump’s crushing presidential victory ushers in a new era of uncertainty in the United States and the world, and heralds a possible shift in US-China relations, frayed in recent years by tensions over everything from trade to the status of self-ruled Taiwan.
In his first message to Trump since the former president secured a second term, Xi said “history has shown that China and the United States benefit from cooperation and suffer from confrontation”, state broadcaster CCTV said.
“A stable, healthy and sustainable China-US relationship is in the common interest of both countries and is in line with the expectations of the international community,” Xi said.
He called for Washington and Beijing to “strengthen dialogue and communication” and “properly manage differences”.
The two countries must “find a correct way… to get along in this new era, to benefit both countries and the world”, Xi said.
Chinese Vice President Han Zheng also sent a message to vice president-elect JD Vance, CCTV said.
Both Republican Trump and his Democratic rival Kamala Harris had pledged to get tougher on Beijing.
But Trump upped the ante, vowing to slap 60 percent tariffs on all Chinese goods entering the United States.
The president-elect aims to “restore some level of balance in the US-China trade”, Yun Sun, a Senior Fellow at the Stimson Center, told AFP.
“Given his arts of ‘maximum pressure’ before striking a deal, I do expect him to impose the tariff,” she added.
Yoon Suk-yeol
Quote:Kim Tae-hyo, deputy national security adviser to South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, said on Wednesday that Seoul will “work to establish a perfect Korea-U.S. security posture with the new Washington administration to ensure unwavering national security.”
Kim said South Korea wants to create a “stronger, more dynamic global comprehensive strategic alliance” with the United States.
Another senior South Korean presidential official said that “communication between President Yoon Suk-yeol and the president-elect will be arranged promptly” to discuss the possibilities for increased cooperation.
South Korea dispatched career diplomat Lee Tae-woo to Washington in March for accelerated negotiations on the renewal of the Special Measures Agreement (SMA), an agreement first established in 1991, because Seoul was concerned Trump would win the 2024 election and demand higher contributions for defense.
Trump and his defense secretary, Mark Esper, both remarked that “wealthy” South Korea should pay more for its own defense during the first Trump administration. South Korea was offering a 13 percent increase at the time, while Trump had something closer to 400 percent in mind.
South Korea managed to renew the SMA for five years with the Biden administration in October, with only an 8.3 percent increase to $1.09 billion in annual contributions. At around the same time, Trump described South Korea as a “money machine” in an interview with Bloomberg News and said it should be paying $10 billion a year.
Netanyahu
Quote:President-elect Donald Trump spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
As Breitbart News reported earlier Wednesday, Netanyahu was among the first world leaders to congratulate Trump after his massive victory, which surprised pollsters in the United States and international observers alike.
Later in the day, the two spoke by telephone. The Prime Minister’s Office provided the following readout (which it translated from Hebrew):
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, this evening (Wednesday, 6 November 2024), spoke with US President-elect Donald Trump and was among the first to call him.
Their conversation was warm and cordial. The Prime Minister congratulated President-elect Trump on his election victory. The two agreed to work together for Israel’s security, and also discussed the Iranian threat.
Trump has said that he wishes to bring the ongoing war in the Middle East — which was started by Iran and its proxy terrorist groups — to a close.
Israel has smashed Hamas, decimated Hezbollah, and stripped Iran of its air defenses. However, it has not managed to rescue the remaining 101 Israeli hostages held by Hamas.
Israelis overwhelmingly preferred Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris in polls, and celebrated his win.
Hezbollah
Quote:Hezbollah marked President-elect Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election by firing rockets at the Israeli town of Trump Heights on Wednesday morning.
There were no reports of damage there.
However, a car was damaged in the town of Ra’anana, near Tel Aviv, when pieces of a Hezbollah missile that was destroyed by Israel’s missile defense system fell onto a parked car.
It is because of the threat of such fragments falling that Israel advises people to stay in shelters or safe rooms for ten minutes following rocket sirens, even if the Iron Dome interceptors or other systems destroy the projectiles.
Trump Heights was named for Trump in appreciation for his recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which were taken from Syria in a defensive war in 1967.
Trump has promised to stop the war in Lebanon, while also allowing Israel to do whatever necessary to defend itself from Iranian-backed terror organizations like Hezbollah and Hamas.
An end to the war could provide opportunities for major foreign policy wins in the early days of the new administration, including an expansion of the Abraham Accords to include Saudi Arabia.
Ayatollah
Quote:The Iranian regime loudly insisted on Wednesday morning that the outcome of the U.S. presidential election does not matter to Tehran’s long-term plans because there was no real difference between victorious President-elect Donald Trump and defeated Vice President Kamala Harris from the Iranian perspective.
“The election of the U.S. president has nothing to do with us. The general policies of the U.S. and Iran are constant,” claimed regime spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani at a press conference on Wednesday morning.
“It doesn’t matter who becomes the president in the United States because all the necessary planning has been made in advance,” she said.
Mohajerani said that “more than four decades of sanctions have made Iran hardened,” so it was not “worried about Trump’s re-election.” This would seem to deflate her previous point about there being no difference between Trump and Harris, the latter being the inheritor of Barack Obama’s “pallets of cash” approach to Iranian diplomacy.
“Basically, we do not see any difference between these two people. Sanctions have strengthened Iran’s internal power and we have the power to deal with new sanctions,” she insisted.
Iranian officials tend to vacillate between claiming that U.S. sanctions are meaningless and impotent, as Mohajerani did on Wednesday morning, and blaming U.S. sanctions for every problem in Iran.
Iran’s state-run PressTV claimed Iranian social media was contemptuous of both Trump and Harris, branding them “war criminals” for supporting Israel against the Iran-backed terrorists of Hamas and Hezbollah.
Many an Iranian sourpuss recalled Trump ordering the assassination of Iran’s terror master, Gen. Qassem Soleimani, in January 2020 while Soleimani was organizing attacks against Americans in Iraq. Others claimed Harris was doomed by her support for the “genocide of the Palestinian people.”
Unsurprisingly, a popular theme among Iranian social media feedback was the accusation that sinister Jews rigged the election to get rid of Harris, even though she was supposedly also a key accomplice to “genocide” in Gaza.
“Who will win the election? The same people who always win U.S. elections – Wall Street, the Pentagon, and Israel,” one Iranian netizen wailed.
Modi
Quote:Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi became one of the first sitting heads of government to congratulate President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday following his electoral victory. Modi confirmed later in the day that Trump called him to re-establish contact and emphasize prioritizing the U.S.-Indian relationship.
President-elect Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday, becoming only the second American president in history, after Grover Cleveland, to win two non-consecutive terms in office. World leaders rapidly began offering their congratulations, from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Argentina’s Javier Milei, while rogue states that endured difficult periods during the first Trump presidency shrugged the election off as irrelevant.
Modi, a Hindu nationalist and one of India’s longest-serving prime ministers, was among the first to congratulate Trump. His call was notable, as Trump defeated in his rival the first Indian-American vice president, and potentially the first-ever Indian-American president.
Modi shared photos of himself with the president-elect during his first term and expressed optimism at having the chance to work together again.
“Heartiest congratulations my friend @realDonaldTrump on your historic election victory,” Modi wrote on Twitter. “As you build on the successes of your previous term, I look forward to renewing our collaboration to further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global and Strategic Partnership.”
“Together, let’s work for the betterment of our people and to promote global peace, stability and prosperity,” he offered.
Later on Wednesday, Modi shared online that he spoke to Trump following his win.
“Had a great conversation with my friend, President @realDonaldTrump, congratulating him on his spectacular victory,” Modi wrote. “Looking forward to working closely together once again to further strengthen India-US relations across technology, defence, energy, space and several other sectors.”
Modi and Trump maintained close ties during Trump’s first term. Trump often leveraged India, as an emerging power, as an ally against communist China and formidable economic trade partner. In 2019, Modi and Trump co-headlined a rally for Indian-Americans in Texas – titled, “Howdy, Modi!” – in which both addressed a crowd of 50,000 supporters.
Maduro
Quote:Socialist dictator of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro claimed on Monday that whoever wins the United States presidential election will have to engage in “good faith” dialogue with his authoritarian regime.
“In any case, whoever gets to the White House, be it Trump or Kamala, will have a Revolutionary Government in Venezuela, a Bolivarian Government, a Bolivarian people,” Maduro said, “with whom they will have to talk, dialogue and understand each other by the rules, always by the rules.”
“We will be here no matter. who wins up there. We do not interfere in the internal affairs of the United States. We simply observe, see, and maintain our path, which is to develop,” he added.
The Venezuelan dictator commented on the U.S. election during the latest episode of his weekly Monday evening television show With Maduro Plus. Maduro, who has repeatedly claimed that the United States seeks to overthrow his regime, said that he has been asked whether a Trump or Harris presidency would be the most convenient for Venezuela.
“What is convenient for Venezuela and Latin America is to maintain our own path, not to depend on anyone,” Maduro said, adding that he considers it invalid that “a Latin American leader calls to vote for a candidate in the United States or to get involved in the U.S. electoral process.”
The Venezuelan socialist regime, which maintains a strident anti-U.S. stance, is a key ally of China, Russia, and Iran in the region, in addition to other rogue regimes and terrorist organizations such as Hezbollah.
Maduro once again alleged, without presenting evidence, that the United States is involved in a coup plot to oust him with the intention of imposing a “fascist model” in the country.
“The model that the [United States] empire has for the world and that they intend to impose with a coup d’état in Venezuela and that they intend to impose with destabilization in Venezuela, let there be no doubt, is a fascist model,” Maduro said.
Milei
Quote:Argentine President Javier Milei congratulated President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday following his electoral victory against Vice President Kamala Harris, sharing art depicting Trump as a friend of Argentina and vowing to work towards improving the bilateral relationship.
Former President Trump is believed to have won the 2024 American presidential election as of Wednesday morning, securing the 270 electoral points necessary to win the election. Trump becomes the second American president to win a non-consecutive second term in the White House after Grover Cleveland, who served from 1885 to 1889 and 1893 to 1897.
Milei has been one of the world’s most vocal heads of state supporting Trump since he won his own presidential election in 2023. A libertarian economist by profession, Milei rose to prominence in his country with effusive condemnations of socialism on cable news and built his own political party, Liberty Advances, in 2021, initially securing a seat in the Argentine Congress and ultimately defeating socialist Minister of Economy Sergio Massa in the 2023 presidential election.
“Congratulations on your formidable electoral victory,” Milei wrote in a social media message to President-elect Trump.
“Now, Make America Great Again. You know that You can count on Argentina to carry out your task,” he continued. “Success and blessings.”
Milei accompanied the message with a photo of the two hugging each other with the American and Argentine flags in the background.
On Instagram, Milei shared an image that appeared to be artificial intelligence art of Trump embracing a lion, the mascot of the Liberty Advances party. He captioned the image with the slogans of Trump’s and his campaigns: “Make America Great Again” and “Viva La Libertad, Carajo!” (“Long Live Liberty, Damn It!”).
Unlike many high-profile libertarians in the United States, who condemned Trump for allegedly promoting big-government policies, Milei supported Trump from Argentina for years before running for president. On his podcast in 2021, Milei dedicated an episode, no longer available on Youtube, to offering a libertarian defense of Trump, calling anti-Trump libertarians “imbeciles” and “morons.” Milei similarly announced following his election that he would reorient the foreign policy of his country away from rogue states such as China and Iran and prioritize his relationship with the United States and Israel.
Milei and Trump first met in February on the sidelines of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Maryland, where both addressed the audience.
