MIDDLE EAST WAR
Quote:The Strait of Hormuz remains open to all shipping except vessels linked to “Iran’s enemies,” Iran’s representative to the UN maritime agency said on Sunday, after US President Donald Trump threatened to target Iranian power plants if the waterway was not “fully open” within 48 hours.
The threat of Iranian attacks during the US-Israeli war on Iran has kept most ships from getting through the narrow strait, the conduit for around a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies, threatening a global energy shock.
Ali Mousavi said Tehran was ready to cooperate with the International Maritime Organization to improve maritime safety and protect seafarers in the Gulf, adding that ships not linked to “Iran’s enemies” could pass the strait by coordinating security and safety arrangements with Tehran.
“Diplomacy remains Iran’s priority. However, a complete cessation of aggression as well as mutual trust and confidence are more important,” Mousavi said, adding that Israeli and US attacks against Iran were at the “root of the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz.”
Quote:Iran vowed to deploy a policy of “zero restraint” and hit energy infrastructure across the Persian Gulf as well as banks that do business with US if President Trump carries out his threat to “obliterate” Tehran’s power plants.
Iran remained defiant against the US on Sunday following Trump’s ultimatum, which demanded an end to the Islamic republic’s hostilities in the Strait of Hormuz, a key trade route that oversees the flow of 20% of the world’s oil supply.
Trump gave a 48-hour deadline, which would end around 8 p.m. ET on Monday.
Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqher Qalibaf said his country would make no such concession, warning of a mass retaliatory attack that would ramp up energy costs across the world if Trump follows through.
“Immediately after the power plants and infrastructure in our country are targeted, the critical infrastructure, energy infrastructure, and oil facilities throughout the region will be considered legitimate targets and will be irreversibly destroyed, and the price of oil will remain high for a long time,” Qalibaf said in a statement.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi added that the response to such an attack from the US would pale in comparison to its latest attacks on oil and gas facilities in the Middle East.
“The ONLY reason for restraint was respect for requested de-escalation. ZERO restraint if our infrastructures are struck again,” Araghchi said.
Iran’s armed forces echoed the warnings, saying any attack on Tehran’s power plants would result in the full closure of the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on energy and communications infrastructure linked to the US.
The Islamic Republic claims that the Straight of Hormuz is not closed — and that only ships belonging to “enemy” nations are being threatened.
However, few oil tankers are passing through the straight — as shipping companies, insurers and crews hesitate to pilot tankers laden with 4 million barrels of crude oil through contested waters.
Quote:Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, after an assessment of the situation in Lebanon with top-ranking Israel Defense Forces staff on Sunday, said he and the prime minister have ordered the IDF to “immediately destroy all the bridges over the Litani river” to prevent the movement of Hezbollah terrorists and weapons to the south.
On March 18, the IDF destroyed two bridges over the Litani after destroying one on March 13, reportedly the first targeting of Lebanese state-owned infrastructure since the start of hostilities.
Katz also ordered the IDF to speed up the destruction of homes in southern Lebanese villages to eliminate terrorist infrastructure, following a similar model used by the Israeli army in Rafah and Beit Hanoun in the Gaza Strip.
“The IDF continues its ground maneuver in Lebanon to eliminate Hezbollah terrorists and reach the anti-tank [firing line] … in order to protect the settlements,” he added.
On Sunday, Hezbollah hit a car in Misgav Am, a kibbutz in the Upper Galilee, with an anti-tank missile, killing one Israeli.
Misgav Am is located directly on the border with southern Lebanon.
Anti-tank guided missiles have an effective range of 2.5 to 5.5 kilometers (1.5 to 3.1 miles).
“We are determined not to allow the pre-Oct. 7 reality to return,” said Katz. “We promised to protect the residents of the north, and that’s exactly what we’re doing.”
“The IDF will continue to allow the evacuation of residents of southern Lebanon north to the Litani River from the war zone for their protection,” he added. The IDF ordered all Lebanese residents south of the Litani to move north on March 4. An estimated 1 million Lebanese have been displaced to date due to the fighting.
Quote:House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) fired back at President Trump Sunday after the commander-in-chief argued the Democratic Party is now the country’s “greatest enemy.”
“Donald Trump should keep his reckless mouth shut before he gets somebody killed,” Jeffries said during an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” when asked about Trump’s Sunday morning Truth Social post.
In the post, the president asserted that Democrats are a greater foe than Iran now that the Islamic regime has been crippled by Operation Epic Fury.
“Now with the death of Iran, the greatest enemy America has is the Radical Left, Highly Incompetent, Democrat Party!” Trump wrote. “Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
On Saturday, Trump said that “Radical Left Democrats have hurt so many people with their vicious and uncaring ways.”
The president specifically cited the congressional fight over Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding.
Democrats have largely voted against funding DHS, which has been partially shut down since Feb. 14, without changes to federal immigration enforcement operations.
The shutdown has wreaked havoc on airports nationwide, with travelers facing hours-long security lines in airports short of TSA screeners (some of whom have walked off the job after missing paychecks).
“What they have done to the Department of Homeland Security, our fantastic TSA Officers, and, most importantly, the great people of our Country, is an absolute disgrace,” Trump said of Democrats.
Quote:Russian President Vladimir Putin said he was a “loyal friend” of Iran Saturday, and offered the embattled republic strength as it fights off US and Israeli attacks.
“Vladimir Putin wished the Iranian people strength in overcoming these severe trials and emphasized that during this difficult time, Moscow remained a loyal friend and reliable partner of Tehran,” the Kremlin said in a public message to congratulate Iranians on the Persian New Year — known as Nowruz — Friday.
The strongman’s remarks are one of the first public shows of support for the Iranian regime since the war in Iran broke out — three weeks ago — with airstrikes that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The comments also come a day after the Kremlin said it was ready to stop sharing intelligence with Tehran — if the US would agree to cut off Ukraine.
The offer to apparently throw its Middle Eastern ally under the bus was made by Russian Envoy Kirill Dmitriev to US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner during their meeting last week in Florida, two people familiar with the talks told Politico.
The Kremlin has been providing Tehran with the locations of US military assets in the Middle East since the start of the war in Iran. In exchange, it wanted Washington to stop supplying Ukraine with intel about Russia.
The quid pro quo was reportedly shot down by President Trump, although Dmitriev claimed the report was “fake” in a post on X.
It’s not the first bizarre proposal Putin has put forward regarding Iran.
Putin personally told Trump during a call last week that he was willing to move Iran’s highly enriched uranium to Russia as a way to supposedly de-escalate the situation, according to Axios.
The proposal was swiftly rejected by the US.
UKRAINE WAR
Quote:Ukraine launched nearly 300 drones at Russia overnight — in one of its largest barrages since the start of the four-year-old war.
The drones struck an oil depot in Saratov in the southwest of Russia that’s processes nearly 5 million tons of oil annually, Ukraine’s Armed Forces said.
“The defense forces of Ukraine will continue to hit important enemy facilities until the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine is completely stopped,” it said on Telegram.
Russian struck Ukraine with more than 150 drones overnight, killing at least nine civilians and wounding 36 more, including two girls in Zaporizhzhia, 11 and 15, whose parents were killed in the strike.
Ukrainian Envoy Rustem Umerov, meanwhile, was in Miami Saturday as Kyiv tries to revive peace talks stalled by the war in Iran.
He met with special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner.
“US and Ukrainian delegations held constructive meetings as part of ongoing mediation efforts, with discussions focused on narrowing and resolving remaining items to move closer to a comprehensive peace agreement,” Witkoff wrote on X Saturday.
Both sides were expected to continue talks Sunday as Ukraine seeks to firm up a date for trilateral talks with Russia, whose representatives refused to travel to the US for negotiations, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Quote:Relentless rain continues to slam the Hawaiian islands through the weekend, fueling dangerous flash flooding that caused thousands of evacuations, soaring power outages, over 200 rescues, and devastating damage in Hawaii.
Although evacuation warnings have now been lifted for vulnerable areas on Oʻahu downstream of Wahiawā Dam, more heavy rain still threatens the region, and Flash Flood watches remain.
On Saturday, FEMA shared on X that it is working closely with Governor Josh Green and Hawaii EMA as the state leads rescue and shelter operations, and that it stands ready to support as needed to help protect lives and communities.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green said in a Friday evening press conference that this is the largest flood Hawaii has seen in 20 years, since the flood of Manoa in 2004.
Hawai‘i National Guard (HING) has activated approximately 200 Soldiers and Airmen to support all counties in response to the ongoing Kona Low storm, as first responders have stayed busy assisting and aiding residents stranded by rapidly rising floodwaters over the past several days.
Gov. Green said nearly 196 people had been rescued as of Friday evening.
More than 80 people at campsites were rescued by the Honolulu Fire Department on O’ahu on Friday, with many more rescues likely across the island.
Flooding reached a dangerous peak Friday when a Flash Flood Emergency was issued over concerns of “imminent failure” at Wahiawa Dam in Honolulu County, prompting evacuation orders for Waialua and Haleʻiwa that were lifted after water levels stabilized.
O’Ahu Emergency Management said on Saturday the dam continues to hold, but stationary bands of heavy rain could raise the dam to a “threatening” level.
Since Thursday, the county has been swamped by catastrophic flooding, with over 20 inches of rain reported.
Gov. Green said a major hospital on Maui, airports, schools, homes, and roads have all been damaged across the islands, as blocked areas expand due to the massive amounts of water flow, debris, and mud.
The Honolulu Police Department also reported a sinkhole at Mokapu and Oneawa on Saturday morning.
“We are now beginning to contemplate the reality that this storm could cost over a billion dollars of damage,” Gov. Green said.
The American Red Cross has boots on the ground on O‘ahu, Maui, and the Big Island to assess damage from the most recent Kona Low storm.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency said it was on the ground to offer support and is monitoring conditions on O’ahu.
Hawaiian Electric warned residents to avoid downed power lines that could be energized.
The agency warned people to stay at least 30 feet away from downed lines.
According to data from poweroutage.com, there were over 8,000 reported outages in Hawaii on Saturday, with the majority reported on the island of O’ahu.
Flash Flood Warnings remain in effect for Honolulu County and Maui County until 2:30 and 3 a.m. local time on Saturday.
A Flood Watch is in place for the entire state, excluding the summits of the Big Island, through Sunday.
Quote:President Donald Trump announced on Sunday agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will be sent to airports across the country to assist the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) amid the ongoing partial government shutdown.
The Context
TSA officers haven’t been paid since the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) partly shut down on February 14, after Democrats balked at funding the agency and demanded changes to immigration enforcement by federal agents following the fatal shootings of U.S. citizens Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis in January.
Since then, airline passengers have seen long lines to pass through security screenings at airports across the country due to the shortage of TSA workers. About 50,000 TSA workers are working without pay as negotiations between lawmakers and the White House continue.
The TSA is overseen by the DHS.
What To Know
In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump wrote ICE agents would be going to airports starting Monday to help TSA agents “who have stayed on the job despite the fact that the Radical left Democrats, who are only focused on protecting hard line criminals who have entered our Country illegally, are endangering the USA by holding back the money that was long ago agreed to with signed and sealed contracts, and all.”
He added that “no matter how great a job ICE does, the Lunatics leading the incompetent Dems will be highly critical of their work. THEY WILL DO A FANTASTIC JOB.”
Trump added that border czar Tom Homan will be in charge of deploying the agents to airports.
Homan said on CNN's State of the Union on Sunday that a plan will be decided by the end of the day about "what airports we're starting with and where we're sending them" and that a "well-thought out" plan would be executed.
Pressed on how well-thought out the plan could be in under 24 hours, Homan told host Dana Bash that ICE "has been at airports across the country for a long time. It's just expanding those things."
Trump's announcement comes a day after he said he would order federal immigration officers to take a role in airport security unless Democrats agree on a bill to fund the DHS.
In a series of posts on Saturday, the president said ICE agents would bring the administration’s immigration crackdown into the nation’s airports.
“Illegal Immigrants who have come into our Country, with heavy emphasis on those from Somalia” would be targeted, Trump wrote in one post on Truth Social.
Funding for DHS failed to advance in the Senate on Friday after Democrats declined to support a bill.
And in a rare weekend session on Saturday, the Senate rejected a motion by Democrats to take up legislation to fund TSA. Republicans argue they need to fund all of the department, not just parts of it.
Quote:An unearthed 2022 clip of Texas Senate candidate James Talarico urging voters to scale back "meat consumption" went viral on Tuesday with many lampooning the rising Democratic star.
Talarico, who has already taken heat for controversial 2020 tweets referring to the "virus of racism" and how White people are guilty of spreading it, was a hot topic on social media again when a GOP communications strategist posted old footage of the masked Senate hopeful criticizing meat consumption in the state famous for its barbecue.
"We have heard, I think heard more and more, issues of animal welfare. I think, not just because it’s the right thing to do, and it’s the moral thing to do, but also… necessary to fight climate change. It is now existential that we try to reduce our meat consumption, and that we try to respect animals," Talarico said during a fundraiser for laws against animal abuse.
"I am proud to say that our campaign has officially become a non-meat campaign," Talarico continued. "We are only buying vegan products from our local vegan businesses."
Talarico, who is trying to become the first Democrat since 1988 to win a Senate election in Texas, will face the winner of a May Republican primary runoff between Sen. John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Cornyn was among Texas lovers of brisket, ribs, and sausage who quickly roasted the liberal politician.
"Vote Republican this November. The steaks couldn’t be higher," Cornyn wrote cheekily in response to the clip that was viewed one million times in the past day.
"Talarico wants to represent Texas but is anti-meat, anti-gun, anti-oil, thinks white people are inherently racist, that God is 'non-binary,' and that the Bible justifies abortion," Rep. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, responded.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, reacted, "This freak wants to BAN BBQ. That’s not Texas."
Turning Point USA spokesperson Andrew Kolvet predicted the clip would "haunt" Talarico in the general election.
"Democrats are trying to fool Texans into believing James Talarico isn’t some whacked out lib, but the clips keep coming," Kolvet wrote.
Fox News political analyst Guy Benson added, "The fact that he made his ‘existential’ meat-free, vegan-only announcement while still masked up in 2022 is just a perfect touch."
Many others took to social media to mock Talarico:
The Talarico campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Quote:Texas Senate nominee and Democratic state Rep. James Talarico said that the Biden administration allowed "chaos" at the border after being convinced that border security was "racist."
While appearing on a live recording of "The Bulwark" podcast Wednesday, Talarico criticized the Biden administration for refusing to acknowledge issues at the border until its final year in office, accusing it of being influenced by outside groups.
"In recent years, there have been a series of advocacy groups that claim to represent the interests of different communities like here in Texas, but actually have no real connection to the actual people on the ground," Talarico said. "And those groups convinced the administration that it was racist to support border security. And nothing could be further from the truth."
"It was my colleagues in the state House who served border communities in South Texas, in El Paso, who were constantly telling me about the chaos in their communities because of the Biden administration's policies," he continued. "And that is not compassionate. Chaos is not compassionate."
"And we, as Democrats, we're the party that's supposed to make the government work for people," Talarico added. "And this was a prime example of government not working for people."
He then shifted gears to attacking Republicans, accusing them of taking his comments on political issues like immigration out of context.
"I have said throughout the whole campaign that our southern border should be like our front porch," Talarico said. "There should be a giant welcome mat out front and a lock on the door, meaning you can welcome hardworking immigrants who want to contribute to this country and keep out people who mean to do us harm."
"Not mutually exclusive goals, but the Republicans don't want you to know that those two things are possible," he continued. "And so they post this clip, and they cut it right before I say ‘lock on the door.’ So it just sounds like I want open borders."
Former President Joe Biden's office did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.
Quote:Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s wife was deeply involved in a democratic socialist activist campaign pushing political candidates critical of Israel and backing a controversial bill targeting pro-Israel charities, The Post has learned.
First lady Rama Duwaji, who Mamdani has bizarrely claimed isn’t a public figure, created artwork for the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America as the lefty group unleashed a public campaign called “PalestineOnTheBallot.com.”
The effort promoted candidates running in Democratic Party primaries who snubbed funding from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and vowed to support the Not on Our Dime Act — a bill that would punish or dissolve registered charities found to support “Israeli settler violence.”

“The Democratic primary is on June 25 and Palestine is on the Ballot, even for your NY State Reps,” the animated message on TikTok and Instagram for the DSA said.
“Are your New York Reps pro-ceasefire? Do they want to end subsidies for Israeli war crimes? Are they taking money from AIPAC of NY?”

The PalestineOnTheBallot.com website also called on supporters to volunteer for ex-Rep. Jamaal Bowman’s failed re-election campaign. A foe of Israel, Bowman was trounced in the Democratic primary by George Latimer.
Quote:It’s a grave situation.
A disturbed serial grave robber in Texas filmed himself throwing human remains over the fence at an FBI field office and then posted the video on YouTube, cops said.
Michael Chadwick Fry, 41, of Bartonville, Texas, said he was throwing the bucket of human bones to “summon” federal agents after stealing the remains from a mausoleum, according to the Bartonville Police Department.
He now faces two counts of abuse of a corpse and one count of tampering with evidence with intent to impair a human corpse, according to police.
Fry’s mother called police Monday after he went to her house and requested money for a U-Haul because he “had a body that needed to moved,” authorities said. He “became irate” at her over the phone call, leaving before cops arrived, according to an arrest warrant obtained by KDFW.
“Shortly thereafter, investigators received credible information from FBI Special Agents indicating that Fry had thrown a bucket containing human bones over the fence of the FBI Dallas Field Office,” according to the arrest warrant.
He shared evidence of his alleged crime by filming a video titled, “We send Elizabeth over the FBI fence to summon them by force” and posting it on YouTube, officials said.
In the video, Fry filmed himself speaking with a person behind a window outside the FBI office to seek a “status check” on an investigation about “what happened to me and my dead family and friends.”
After returning to his car, Fry is seen pulling a bucket containing the alleged remains out of the trunk and hurling them over a fence before driving off.
“There’s more videos coming. We’re going to take bones all over the place. I got more,” Fry said in the video as he drove away.
Fry allegedly stole an urn from a cemetery in Oklahoma City in February and raided a separate mausoleum in Denton, Texas, according to police.
He also searched for three cemeteries in Texas and Oklahoma on the GPS in his mother’s car.
He referred to the remains in the bucket as “Elizabeth Virginia Lyon,” according to the affidavit.
Authorities are carrying out DNA tests to identify the bones.
Fry has a lengthy rap sheet, according to the police.
In 2018, he drove his car into the KDFW studios in downtown Dallas, leaving behind a bright orange duffel bag that prompted a bomb squad response.
He was reportedly upset that cops had shot his friend.
Fry is currently in the Denton County Jail on $30,000 bond.
Quote:Travelers at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport faced a hellish travel weekend, with TSA wait lines reportedly lasting nearly three hours because of the partial government shutdown.
Dizzying images from America’s busiest air hub shows the security lines extending into the baggage-claim section of the airport on both Saturday and Sunday, with estimated waiting times reaching 153 minutes, according to a traveler.
“The line is WRAPPING AROUND BAGGAGE CLAIM!!! THIS IS PURE INSANITY!!!!!!” Matt Van Swol wrote on X after arriving at the airport at 6 a.m.
The staggering long lines at the Georgia hub and other airports around the country triggered President Trump on Sunday to order Immigration and Customs Enforcement officersto be deployed at airports to help clear them.
After TSA agents missed their first paycheck last week because of the funding shutdown, daily absentism among workers soared.
At Hartsfield-Jackson, that daily rate has reached as high as 40%, according to airport officials.
Along with the lack of staff, the airport was also hit with increased traffic over the weekend because of spring break, with about 350,000 passengers expected to travel through the Atlanta airport between Thursday and Sunday, WSBTV reported.
Tedi Zimmerman, who arrived four hours early at the airport for her flight to Florida on Saturday, told the outlet it was ridiculous for travelers to face such long wait times while politicians in Washington argue about funding.
“Get your act together,” she said. “There are priorities. This is one of them. This is crazy.”
The security-line hell also has resulted in wait times hitting nearly two hours at Houston’s George Bush International Airport in Texas and more than an hour at New York City’s JFK International Airport in Queens.
Quote:FBI agents who are investigating Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance are reportedly looking into a vacant property in her Arizona neighborhood — as the search for the missing 84-year-old nears the end of its seventh week.
Guthrie, who is the mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, disappeared from her home in the Catalina Foothills in the early hours of Feb. 1 in what is now believed to have been a “targeted” abduction.
Video footage captured by a security camera mounted in the doorway of her $1 million home showed a masked, armed intruder approaching the dwelling shortly before she is thought to have been kidnapped—however authorities have yet to identify the person in the clip.
For weeks, investigators have been canvassing her Arizona neighborhood, speaking to neighbors, examining security camera footage from local dwellings, and interviewing anyone who might have had contact with her before she disappeared.
Now, NewsNation correspondent Brian Entin — who has been on the ground outside of Tucson for weeks — reports that local FBI agents may have turned their attention to another target: a property in Nancy’s neighborhood that was vacated by its residents before her disappearance.
“Some of the things that they’re talking about is there’s one neighbor that moved out before Nancy disappeared, and they are asking more questions about that situation,” Entin revealed on a recent episode of his YouTube show, “Brian Entin Investigates.”
“Not to say that that has anything to do with what happened. But that is something the FBI agents are asking about.”
While Entin did not share any other details about why the property may have lured interest from the authorities, retired Pima County SWAT commander Bob Krygier shed some light on how the dwelling might have played a role in Nancy’s capture in a new interview with Parade.
Quote:As the search for Nancy Guthrie hit its 50th day Sunday, leaving the local sheriff desperate and humiliated, a legendary cold-case detective insisted to The Post that the case is still ripe with potential leads.
“Nancy’s case is still very fresh,” said Brian Martin, the crack detective from Fort Payne, Ind., who helped catch the killer of 8-year-old April Tinsley almost 30 years after her murder.
Martin said he is optimistic that law enforcement will track down the abductor of the 84-year-old mom of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, after Nancy vanished with nary a trace from her home near Tucson, Ariz., on Feb. 1.
The detective said his money is still on the DNA.
“I’m sure they have an item of evidence which was probably at the scene and was foreign, meaning this is something that would not have been in her house, and this was something that was probably left by the suspect,” he said.
Martin added that the case is a long, long way from going cold.
“Often agencies will not consider a case cold until it has sat inactive with no leads or evidence developments after three years. I would not consider the Nancy Guthrie [case to be cold] now,” he said.
Frustrated locals don’t share Martin’s optimism: A recall effort is under way for Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos after 50 torturous days of false alarms, dead-end leads and refusals to let the FBI take over.
Investigators recovered clear footage of at least one masked, armed suspect disabling Guthrie’s doorbell security camera.
They also found suspicious DNA samples from inside her home and from a glove matching a description of the suspect’s that had been discarded nearby.
Cops detained and questioned several persons of interest based on anonymous tips and cellular tower records. Two of those people were driving vehicle models the sheriff deemed suspicious.
Quote:An illegal Venezuelan migrant accused of executing a Loyola University Chicago freshman from New York entered the US under the Biden administration, and was released under Chicago’s sanctuary city laws before the killing, the Department of Homeland Security said Sunday.
Jose Medina-Medina, 25, allegedly murdered 18-year-old Sheridan Gorman early Thursday morning while she walked along the Chicago lakefront with her friends, according to a DHS release obtained by Fox News.
The illegal alien was caught and released at the border under President Joe Biden’s administration in May 2023, according to the DHS.
Medina-Medina was also previously released from local custody in Chicago— a sanctuary city — just a month later after he was arrested for shoplifting from Macy’s.
The gunman approached Gorman, a freshman from Yorktown, New York, while wearing a mask at around 1:30 a.m., according to cops.
As Gorman attempted to flee, he allegedly shot her in the head, before escaping to a nearby apartment building.
“Sheridan Gorman had her whole life ahead of her before this cold-blooded killer decided to end her life,” DHS Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said.
“She was failed by open border policies and sanctuary politicians who released this illegal alien twice before he went on to commit this heinous murder,” she added.
“We are calling on Governor Pritzker and Chicago’s sanctuary politicians to commit to not releasing this criminal illegal alien from jail back into American neighborhoods,” Bis said.
Gorman’s grieving parents had earlier issued a tribute describing her as “deeply loving,” and “everyone’s cheerleader.”
No motive has been given for the shooting, which a New York state lawmaker has slammed as evidence of America’s “clearly broken” immigration system.
“Our immigration system is clearly broken and endangering innocent American citizens. No one should be a victim of a system that fails on multiple levels,” State Assemblyman Matt Slater (R-Yorktown) told The Post.
Gorman and friends went out to the pier at Tobey Prinz Beach in the wee hours to try to catch a glimpse of the northern lights, her family said.
That’s when a masked gunman “emerged from the shadows,” according to a police report.
A single bullet casing was found a short distance from Gorman’s body.
Quote:A child predator cut off his ankle monitor and tried to flee the US before the final day of his trial for sexually assaulting his girlfriend’s daughter — only to be nabbed at a bus stop, authorities said.
Sicko Jorge Campos, 42, was due in court in Colorado on Friday for the final day of his trial, where he was found guilty of abusing the child for years, according to a news release from Colorado’s 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
When Campos didn’t show up to hear the verdict, officials went to his home in New Castle, Colo., where they found his ankle monitor ditched in a dumpster, the office said.
Campos then evaded authorities for two days until a tipster reported he was on a bus bound for Mexico, CBS News Colorado said.
Campos was arrested Sunday at a bus stop at a gas station in Chaparral, New Mexico — roughly an hour’s drive from the US-Mexico border.
During their weekend search for the pervert, officials had released a photo showing Campos dressed in a green shirt and black pants and leaving a hotel in New Mexico. He had a bulky black backpack that hung heavily on his back, as if it had been packed until it was nearly bursting at the seams.
It was not clear when and where the photo was taken.
Campos will be extradited to Colorado, where he will face new charges for allegedly removing his ankle monitor and fleeing from justice, the outlet reported.
Quote:A Rockland County mailman’s attack on a 4-year-old Jewish boy is not being treated as a hate crime because cops don’t believe it had anything to do with the tot’s religion, police told The Post on Sunday.
Shocking video caught the post-office employee allegedly going postal and shoving the child to the ground when he came near him while he was working his route in Ramapo last week.
The 39-year-old United States Postal Service worker, Gabriel Stan, who neighbors said lives with his parents in Stony Point, was initially charged with endangering the welfare of a child and misdemeanor attempted assault.
Cops then slapped an extra charge of felony attempted assault after outcry from the community.
The footage shows the youngster approaching the mail carrier, who then shoves the boy so hard that the child’s yarmulke is knocked off his head and he goes flying onto the sidewalk.
The kid is then seen retrieving his yarmulke and walking away.
The phone number listed for Stan was not in service, and no one answered the door to his family’s home Sunday.
“Oh, man! That is crazy,” one of Stan’s neighbors told The Post on Sunday of the situation. “You sure? “I have a 10-year-old, and if he ever did anything like that to my kids it would get ugly quick,” the neighbor said. “I am shocked. He never seemed like a guy who’d do that.”
US Rep. Mike Lawler (R-Hudson Valley) condemned the incident on X on Saturday.
“The video is extremely disturbing and outrageous,” he posted. “There is zero justification for this type of violence and abuse towards a child — and can be zero tolerance. There must be a complete and thorough investigation by the police and the @USPS.”
The incident occurred in a heavily Jewish Orthodox community in the suburban county, sparking concerns that it was an anti-Semitic attack.
But Ramapo police said Sunday that the incident was not believed to be a hate crime, although they did not explain why.
The postal service said in a statement to The Post: “USPS does not comment on administrative actions regarding it’s employees.”
If a Muslim kid had gone through the same ordeal, people would have called the mailman a racist in no time.
Quote:A new statue of Christopher Columbus went up on the White House grounds Sunday that was built using pieces from a monument to the Italian explorer that protesters destroyed six years ago.
The 13-foot, one-ton replica of a Columbus statue toppled in Baltimore in 2020 – then dumped into the city’s inner harbor – was commissioned by the Conference of Presidents of Major Italian American Organizations and is part of the White House’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.
The statue has been placed outside the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.
Artists retrieved shards of marble belonging to the wrecked statue from the harbor that were used in the recreation – and reached out to the White House after officials in Baltimore refused to put the new monument up, according to the organization.
“Columbus statues have long stood as symbols of pride and cultural identity for more than 18 million Americans of Italian descent,” Basil M. Russo, the conference’s president, said in a statement. “For over a century, Columbus’s legacy helped Italian immigrants navigate prejudice and hardship, serving as a source of unity and belonging as they built new lives in this country.
“Columbus Day itself emerged in the aftermath of the 1891 New Orleans lynching, when 11 Italian immigrants were killed by a mob of thousands, an event that prompted a national effort to promote the acceptance and assimilation of Italian Americans,” Russo continued. “This history remains central to why these monuments matter.”
Baltimore’s Columbus statue was torn down in July 2020 by Black Lives Matter activists, who argued the Italian explorer was responsible for the genocide and exploitation of native peoples in the Americas.
The statue was owned by the city and dedicated in 1984 by former Mayor William Donald Schaefer and former President Ronald Reagan.
At the time of the statue’s destruction, a spokesperson for Baltimore’s then Mayor Jack Young said the monument “may represent different things to different people.”
“We understand the dynamics that are playing out in Baltimore are part of a national narrative,” the spokesperson told the Baltimore Sun.
President Trump signed a proclamation last year hailing Columbus as an American hero.
“Columbus Day — we’re back, Italians,” Trump declared after signing the proclamation. “We love the Italians.”
CHINA
Quote:A Chinese warship locked its fire-control radar onto a Philippine navy vessel during a patrol in contested waters of the South China Sea, Manila said Friday, calling the move “alarming.”
Why It Matters
China lays claim to most of the South China Sea, an energy-rich waterway that carries roughly one-third of global shipping, citing what it describes as historical rights, despite a 2016 ruling by an international arbitral tribunal that rejected those claims.
The dispute has put Beijing at odds with several neighbors, including the Philippines. The expanding presence of Chinese maritime forces within Manila’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) has led to periodic confrontations and prompted the U.S. treaty ally to increase military spending and deepen defense ties with Washington and other regional partners.
Newsweek reached out to the Chinese Foreign Ministry via email for comment.
What To Know
The incident occurred on March 7, when the Philippine Navy’s guided-missile frigate BRP Miguel Malvar was on patrol near Sabina Shoal, an atoll within the Philippines’ EEZ about 93 miles west of Palawan and more than 600 miles from China.
“This was an alarming and provocative action that created unnecessary risk and could have led to misinterpretation and misunderstanding at sea,” the Philippine military said in a statement. “While the situation did not further escalate, the incident underscores the need for all states to act with restraint and professionalism at sea.”
Fire-control radar is a precision targeting system used to track objects and guide weapons, and locking it onto another vessel is typically seen as a serious escalation.
\In a separate incident on Friday, the Philippines accused Chinese forces of firing flares near a Philippine coast guard aircraft conducting a maritime patrol near Mischief Reef, an artificial island built and militarized by China within the Philippines’ EEZ.
What People Are Saying
Philippine coast guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela, who was onboard the patrol plane, told reporters the incident was dangerous “because we cannot really expect how far the flares can reach the aircraft," ABS-CBN reported.
Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Jiang Bin said during a regular press briefing Thursday that China has "indisputable sovereignty" over the South China Sea islands Beijing claims. He accused the Philippine coast guard of recent "provocations" and playing the "victim's narrative."
