MIDDLE EAST WAR
Quote:Alleged Iranian spies with ties to regime bigwigs have been charged with infiltrating Silicon Valley.
Last month, a federal grand jury indicted three Iranian software engineers for allegedly stealing trade secrets from tech companies, including Google.
Two of the suspects are sisters, Samaneh Ghandali, 41, and Sorvoor Ghandali, 32. They were charged alongside Mohammadjavad Khosravi,40, who is Samaneh’s husband, with allegedly using their employment at unidentified technology companies to “obtain access to confidential and sensitive information,” according to the Department of Justice.
The tech workers then allegedly “exfiltrated confidential and sensitive documents, including trade secrets related to processor security and cryptography and other technologies, from Google and other technology companies.”
They are then accused of transferring the confidential data to other locations, including Iran, according to the indictment. They have all pleaded not guilty.
The Ghandali sisters’ father is Iranian regime insider Shahabeddin Ghandali, a former chief executive of the Teachers Investment Fund Corporation back in Iran. He was arrested and charged over an embezzlement of $2.5 billion in 2016, and fraud involving Iran’s Bank Sarmayeh, according to reports. Although arrested, it is unclear if he was ever prosecuted in relation to the scheme, as others were.
Opponents of the Iranian regime in the US say that the family connections could have facilitated the alleged spying.
“The issue is risk, access, and vulnerability,” said Iranian human rights activist Lawdan Bazargan, who heads up the Alliance Against Islamic Regime of Iran Apologists.
“When individuals connected to powerful networks in an authoritarian system enter universities and research centers, they gain access not only to advanced technology but also to professional networks and institutional trust. In certain cases … access can be abused.”
There are other examples of the Iranian regime’s tentacles finding their way into US institutions.
Kaveh Lotfolah Afrasiabi, a prominent Iranian-American political science professor who has taught at Harvard and other elite universities, was charged with failing to register as a foreign agent for Iran under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) in 2021.
Prosecutors claimed that for more than ten years he was secretly working for the government of Iran and the Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations (IMUN) “to spread their propaganda.”
Quote:The head of the International Energy Agency said Monday that at least 40 critical energy assets across nine countries in the Middle East have been “severely or very severely damaged” – threatening to keep oil prices higher for longer even if the war in Iran ends soon.
Speaking at the National Press Club in Australia, IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol said it would take time to repair damages incurred at oil and gas fields, refineries and pipelines since the war broke out on Feb. 28.
That could keep oil prices – which at one point reached nearly $120 a barrel during the conflict – elevated even if the war ends within the next couple of weeks, since energy infrastructure is particularly complex and operators will wait to send in workers until it is safe.
As the war enters its fourth week, the world is already facing the worst-ever energy supply disruption as Iran maintains its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route for 20% of the world’s oil supply.
Damage to Qatar’s Las Raffan plant, which supplies a fifth of the world’s liquefied natural gas, used for electricity, heating and cooking, has also disrupted the supply of LNG in what some analysts are calling an “Armageddon” situation.
The IEA has started urging households to work from home, carpool and fly less often to combat soaring oil prices, and approved a historic release of 400 million barrels of oil from its reserves.
The supply shock from the war in Iran is already equivalent to the major oil crises of the 1970s and the 2022 gas shortages “put together,” Birol said Monday.
“And, if I may, not only oil and gas,” Birol added. “Some of the vital arteries of the global economy, such as petrochemicals, such as fertilizers, such as sulfur, such as helium. Their trade is all interrupted, which would have serious consequences for the global economy.”
Oil prices eased below $100 a barrel Monday morning after President Trump ordered a five-day pause on plans to strike Iranian power plants following what he called “productive” talks with Tehran.
The president had escalated tensions over the weekend with a 48-hour deadline for Iran to open the strait, but Iran vowed to retaliate on any attacks on its plants with strikes on US infrastructure.
Quote:President Trump said Monday it was unclear whether Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is alive following reports that he was injured in the early hours of Operation Epic Fury.
“We have not heard from the son,” Trump told reporters as he departed Palm Beach International Airport in South Florda for an event in Memphis, Tenn. “We don’t know if he’s living.”
Moments earlier, the president had stated that the US was engaged in discussions that could end the Middle Eastern war “with the man who, I believe, is the most respected and the ‘leader'” of Iran.
When asked if he was referring to the “supreme leader,” Trump responded: “No.”
“[Ali] Khamenei was killed,” the president said. “Khamenei’s son is unavailable. Nobody knows what happened to him. I can say they haven’t seen him there either. Something is going on with him. But regardless, I don’t consider him really the leader, but they do have some leaders left.”
The Jerusalem Post reported soon after Trump spoke that the focal point of US-Iranian talks was Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of Iran’s parliament.
Ghalibaf, 64, previously served as the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps air force and has appeared on Iranian state TV leading lawmakers in chants of “Death to America! Death to Israel!”
Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, was tapped March 8 to replace his father, 86-year-old Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed on the first day of the joint US-Israeli bombing campaign Feb. 28.
Mojtaba Khamenei is believed to have been injured in the strike that killed his father, though reports have varied concerning the extent of his wounds.
The New York Times, citing Iranian officials, reported March 11 that the supreme leader had suffered a fractured foot, bruised eye and face lacerations.
The following day, an Iranian source claimed to The Sun that Khamenei was actually in a coma and undergoing intensive care at the Sina University Hospital in Tehran.
“One or two of his legs have been cut off. His liver or stomach has also ruptured. He is apparently in a coma as well,” the source alleged.
Since being named supreme leader, Khamenei has only issued written statements that have been read out by state TV broadcasters, raising speculation about the severity of his condition after he was a no-show at his own succession rally.
Quote:President Trump said he wants Iran to give up its nuclear materials — down to the “nuclear dust,” as part of the ongoing peace talks.
“We want the nuclear dust. We’re going to want that,” he told reporters as he left Florida on Monday, referring to the enriched uranium.
“We’ve agreed to that. Yeah, we’re going to. We’ve agreed to that,” he added.
In a surprise move on Monday, Trump said the US will not attack any part of Iran’s power and energy infrastructure for five days after Washington and Tehran engaged in “very good and productive talks” over the weekend about ending the three-week-old war.
The president said talks would continue on Monday by phone, adding the parties would meet very soon.
He noted, as one of the conditions of a ceasefire, Iran must hand over its enriched uranium before the war can end.
“We want no enrichment. But we also want the … enriched uranium, where, if this happens, it’s a great start for Iran to build itself back, and it’s everything that we want,” he said.
Trump has said repeatedly that the goal of the war is to keep Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.
“We’re looking for all of the things that we’ve been talking about. We want to see no nuclear bomb, no nuclear weapon, not even close to it, low-key in the missiles. We want to see peace in the Middle East,” he said, describing what he wants to happen in order to stop the strikes.
The president shrugged off reports from Iranian state media, which, citing an unnamed official, said there were no talks between the two nations.
Quote:WASHINGTON — The US is continuing to “aggressively” strike Iran after President Trump imposed a five-day pause on attacks against Tehran’s energy infrastructure following “very good and productive conversations” with the crumbling regime.
US Central Command made clear that non-energy targets within Iran are still very much in play as Trump conveys optimism about the possibility of cutting some sort of deal with the Islamic Republic by the end of the week.
“U.S. forces continue to aggressively strike Iranian military targets with precision munitions,” CENTCOM declared on social media with footage of a facility getting blown up.
US Central Command, which coordinates American military operations in the Middle East, did not disclose what specific target was struck in the video.
Earlier in the day, Trump announced that after two days of negotiations with representatives of Iran, he has decided to halt attacks on Tehran’s power plants and infrastructure for five days.
The announcement, which came shortly before the New York Stock Exchange opened, prompted a massive rebound within the stock market, prompting the Dow Jones to jump over 630 points after weeks of decline.
But key officials in Iran quickly disputed Trump’s claims, with Iran’s Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bager Galibaf denying that talks took place.
“No negotiations have been held with the US, and fake news is used to manipulate the financial and oil markets and escape the quagmire in which the US and Israel are trapped,” he said.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry also hit back at Trump’s claims, telling state media that: “Remarks by the US president are part of efforts to reduce energy prices and buy time to implement his military plans.”
Trump didn’t disclose the Iranian official with whom his administration held talks, fretting that he couldn’t divulge that because “I don’t want them to be killed.” He claimed that special envoy Steve Witkoff held the talks for his administration.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi acknowledged before Trump’s announcement that he had talks with his Turkish counterpart. In the past, Turkey has mediated negotiations between the US and Iran.
Quote:Israeli Transportation Minister Miri Regev announced additional restrictions on flight operations at Ben-Gurion International Airport, effective Monday afternoon, in the wake of increased Iranian missile attacks on the country over the weekend.
The move, which follows a security assessment and recommendations from officials, will further limit the number of arrivals and departures at Israel’s main international airport to one per hour, with the number of departing passengers allowed on each departing flight reduced to 50 from 120.
“This is an inconvenience, but our commitment to human life is our top priority, and this is where the decision is derived from,” Regev said in a late Sunday night statement. “At any given moment, in accordance with the recommendations of the security establishment and professional bodies, the guidelines may change.”
The limitations will adversely affect thousands of passengers seeking to leave Israel whose flights will be cancelled.
She noted that 140,000 Israelis have returned home since the war broke out last month on repatriation flights operated by Israel’s four airlines led by flag carrier El Al, Israir, Arkia and Air Haifa.
No international airlines have been operating flights to Israel since the outbreak of the war against Iran on Feb. 28, with Israeli carriers offering limited and restricted service, focused on repatriation.
There are no restrictions on land border crossings to Egypt and Jordan, which have served as a gateway to and from Israel over the last three weeks.
Israel’s three smaller carriers have been offering some flights, often on leased airlines, through these airports.
El Al on Monday urged the government to open the small Ramon Airport near the southern Red Sea resort city of Eilat for wartime operations as an alternative to Israel’s main international airport outside of Tel Aviv.
The ongoing war has decimated tourism for the upcoming Passover and Easter holidays, which are typically a high season for travel to and from Israel.
Quote:Iran warned Monday it will strike electrical plants across the Middle East if US President Donald Trump follows through on his threat to bomb power stations in the Islamic Republic, and threatened to mine the “entire Persian Gulf” if invaded.
The threat by Tehran puts at risk both electrical supplies and water in the Gulf Arab states, particularly as the desert nations commingle their power stations with desalination plants crucial for supplying drinking water.
Following the threat, Iran’s semiofficial Fars news agency published a list of such facilities, including the United Arab Emirates’ nuclear power plant. Over the weekend, Iran launched missiles targeting Dimona in Israel, near a facility key to its long-suspected atomic weapons program. The Israeli facility wasn’t damaged in the barrage.
Israel launched new attacks Monday on the Iranian capital, saying it had “begun a wide-scale wave of strikes” on infrastructure targets in Tehran without immediately elaborating.
Tehran says it will mine Persian Gulf if invaded
As concerns grow in Tehran about the potential arrival of US Marines in the region, Iran’s Defense Council warned against the idea of an invasion.
“Any attempt by the enemy to target Iran’s coasts or islands will, naturally and in accordance with established military practice, lead to the mining of all access routes … in the Persian Gulf and along the coasts,” it said in a statement.
The US has been trying to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf, to energy shipments. Iran has shut the strait, through which a fifth of the world’s oil is shipped along with other important commodities, in response to US and Israeli strikes.
A trickle of ships has been getting through the strait and Iran insists it remains open — just not to the US, Israel or their allies.
UKRAINE WAR
Quote:Russia’s largest oil port was crippled in a massive air attack by Ukrainian drones, officials said early Monday as images showed huge balls of fire.
Several strikes blew up huge swathes of the Baltic Sea port of Primorsk — which processes at least a million barrels of oil per day in a market already crippled with rising prices over the Iran war.
Drones struck fuel storage tanks at the port — home to Russia’s clandestine network of so-called “shadow ships” — with satellite pictures showing smoke rising from several areas of the key terminal.
The port was struck as Russian defense systems desperately managed to intercept more than 70 other drones above Leningrad overnight, according to the area’s governor, Alexander Drozdenko.
It’s not the first time Ukraine has targeted Primorsk, located 62 miles from St. Petersburg. The port came under a barrage of drone fire in September, which impacted oil loading operations.
Ukraine ramped up its attacks against Russian infrastructure this weekend.
The Ust-Luga port was targeted Sunday and operations were temporarily suspended, according to Reuters. It’s not clear if the port, also located in the Baltic region, suffered any substantial damage.
The attack came hours after a southwestern Russian oil refinery was targeted, according to Bloomberg.
Last week, Ukraine launched almost 300 drones at Russia in one of its largest barrages since the war began, targeting an oil depot in Saratov, which processes almost 5 million tons of oil a year.
The price of Russian Urals oil, which has been heavily shunned by West, has surged in recent weeks — from $45 a barrel to $76 — and this comes as the war in Iran rages.
Quote:Indian authorities accuse six Ukrainians and an American of supporting insurgent groups along the India-Myanmar border. Ukraine suggests that the case might be politically motivated.
A high-profile investigation against foreign nationals is gaining pace in India. Six Ukrainian citizens and an American are alleged to have violated the country's anti-terror laws and have been detained by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). They will be held in custody for questioning until March 27.
The case might also take on a political dimension because it is possible that Russia might have provided the information about the Ukrainian nationals to New Delhi, NIA sources told DW.
The Ukrainians and the US citizen were arrested at the airports of Calcutta, Lucknow and Delhi on March 13. Little is publicly known about them. According to the NIA and court documents seen by DW the names of the Ukrainians are Petro H., Taras S., Ivan S., Marian S., Maksym H. and Viktor K.
DW follows the German media code of conduct whereby media outlets do not publish the full names of suspects.
The American national, Matthew V., reportedly participated in the Iraq war and the Libyan civil war after 2011 as well as the war in Ukraine. He also founded a Washington-based security consulting firm called Sons of Liberty International. According to its website the company is non-profit and "provides free security consulting and training services to vulnerable populations to enable them to defend themselves against terrorist and insurgent groups." The company was also involved in training soldiers in Ukraine who are fighting Russia in the war there, the website says.
Indian authorities: Detained Ukrainians part of larger network
According to the NIA's report and its remand submissions before the court, the group entered India legally on tourist visas but then travelled eastward to the state of Mizoram, an area requiring special permits for foreign nationals, which they did not possess.
From there, investigators allege, they crossed illegally into Myanmar through informal routes along the porous India-Myanmar border.
Investigators suggest that the seven arrested men may represent part of a larger network. According to their information as many as 14 Ukrainian nationals entered India on tourist visas on different dates, travelling to Indian city Guwahati and then onto Mizoram without the required permits.
Quote:The European Union and Germany have expressed concern at reports of Hungary's foreign minister briefing Russia on EU talks. Prime Minister Viktor Orban has launched an investigation into what he's calling wiretapping.
Hungarian Prime Minsiter Viktor Orban on Monday said he had ordered an investigation into what he has referred to as the "wiretapping" of Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.
"The wiretapping of a government member is a serious attack on Hungary. I have instructed the Minister of Justice to immediately investigate the information," Orban wrote on Facebook.
This comes after a weekend media report in the Washington Post, dismissed by Szijjarto himself as "fake news" and "senseless conspiracy theories," accusing the Hungarian foreign minister of regularly passing on sensitive information about European Union negotiations to Russia.
The report made no mention of "wiretapping," instead accusing Szijjarto of deliberately briefing his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov.
Europe, Germany voice concern at allegations
The Washington Post report cited unnamed serving or former EU security officials as saying that Szijjarto regularly called Russia's Lavrov during breaks in EU meetings to give "direct reports on what was discussed" and suggest possible courses of action.
The European Commission on Monday stopped short of treating the allegations as corroborated but nevertheless demanded an investigation and explanation.
"[A] relationship of trust between member states, and between them and the institution, is fundamental for the work of the EU," spokeswoman Anitta Hipper said, calling the allegations deeply concerning. "We expect the Hungarian government to provide clarifications."
A spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry also stopped short of directly implicating Szijjarto.
"The allegations that are being raised here are very serious," he said. "Negotiations between EU foreign ministers are confidential and rooted in the founding principles of the Union. We will not tolerate a violation of these principles."

Quote:WASHINGTON — President Trump is changing the way he approaches the West Wing — literally — by swapping out the current gray and brown pavers for a black granite walkway, The Post can exclusively reveal.
The swap will affect the West Wing Colonnade, the walking path from the executive residence to the Oval Office.
Preparation for the construction work began on Monday.
The covered, column-lined pathway runs alongside the Rose Garden and takes pedestrians past the Presidential Walk of Fame, Trump’s installation of framed portraits of past chief executives — and one autopen in the case of Joe Biden.
The new pathway is meant to contrast with the gold frames that surround the presidential portraits.
The National Park Service will take possession of the current Tennessee flagstone pavers. The stones will be sent to a nursery where they will be kept for future use.
Trump has been on a renovation kick at the White House in his second term, knocking down the East Wing to build a ballroom, redecorating the Oval Office, and adding gold-plated signage to various areas of the building. He’s also added new statues around the campus and paved over the Rose Garden to make it easier to hold events there.
“President Trump continues to implement long-overdue and necessary renovations to beautify the People’s House as we approach our great Nation’s 250th anniversary of independence. Thanks to the Builder-in-Chief, the White House will be properly glorified and remain in excellent condition for generations to come,” White House spokesman Davis Ingle told The Post.
Quote:A sharp staffing shortage hit Southern California travel over the weekend, with more than one in five TSA officers at Long Beach Airport calling out on Saturday, creating one of the most severe shortfalls in the country.
Roughly 21% of screeners failed to report for duty at the coastal airport, according to federal data.
Despite the unusually high absentee rate, some travelers moving through Long Beach Airport on Sunday said operations appeared relatively smooth, though many had braced for delays by arriving early, ABC7 reported.
The airport, which serves as a key regional hub for Southern California flyers — particularly for domestic routes and budget carriers — typically handles a steady flow of passengers but is smaller and more streamlined than major hubs like LAX.
A spokesperson for Long Beach Airport said flights and screening operations had not yet been significantly disrupted, but cautioned that conditions could worsen if the shutdown drags on.
The disruption in Long Beach comes as airports nationwide grapple with staffing gaps, with more than 11% of TSA workers calling out across the US on the same day — the highest rate recorded since the shutdown began.
John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, MCO in Florida, O’Hare International Airport in Illinois, and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston were among the airports with the most delayed flights.
In response, the Trump administration deployed Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to assist at airport security checkpoints starting Monday.
As of Monday morning, the agents were deployed to 14 major hubs; however, no deployment was made to any California airports.
The staffing crisis stems from the prolonged partial government shutdown, which has left TSA officers working without pay for weeks.
Federal authorities say the strain is already taking a toll, with hundreds of TSA employees reportedly leaving their positions since the funding lapse began.
Quote:An Oregon man is back in police custody after threatening to “kill the president” in a slew of text messages to his probation officer.
Diedrich Holgate, 47, was convicted and sentenced last July after making threats on social media and placing several direct calls to the US Secret Service Washington Field Office, threatening to kill then-presidential candidate Donald Trump and then-President Joe Biden.
In a June 2024 call to the Secret Service, Holgate said, “I have the right to kill the president.”
“I will kill everyone,” Holgate said, according to the federal indictment. “The president is going to die. I don’t care if it is Trump or Biden. I will hang everyone for treason.”
Two months later, Holgate called the field office again, threatening to “hang his a** for treason” and saying that no one was safe from him, including the First Lady and Supreme Court justices.
Holgate was released from custody on January 21 and was ordered to live in a halfway house.
Just weeks after being released from prison, Holgate’s probation officer filed a petition to revoke his probation for several violations, including continued death threats toward the president.
“Holgate has made multiple threatening statements via text message to his probation officer,” the petition alleged. “Probable cause has been established that a violation of supervised release has been committed.”
Holgate sent his probation officer several text messages that included “Trump’s gonna fkn pardon me or I’ll kill him!!!!”
“You’re with me or You’re a traitor & infidel that’s taken the Mark of the beast. & Hell? That won’t last forever. Second death. You’ll be erased,” Holgate wrote in another message to his probation officer.
A magistrate judge ruled in a preliminary hearing that there was probable cause to believe Holgate violated the conditions of his release. In addition to making threats, Holgate failed to report to a meeting with his probation officer and left the halfway house. He also violated house rules by smoking a vape.
Holgate will remain in custody until his next hearing is scheduled on March 26.
He was previously convicted in 2018 for sending threatening voicemails to two Texas judges in Travis County.
Quote:An Azerbaijan national who entered the U.S. illegally robbed the federal government of millions using a sophisticated scam that targeted Medicare funds. And now he’s on the run.
Anar Rustamov formed a fake durable medical equipment company, or “DME” to fraudulently bill taxpayer funded Medicare for $90 million in supplies that were not needed or received according to DOJ officials.
Rustomov’s San Francisco Bay Area company Dublin Helping Hands was submitting the claims the Feds say.
The listed patients were unaware of the submissions and the referring medical provider listed did not authorize the claims, according to the indictment.
The claims listed everything from back braces to glucose monitors.
The fraudulent activity took place from October of 2024 and peaked in April of 2025 when the company submitted claims totaling more than $49 million.
“The billing volume and timing was designed to maximize the amount of money paid out before the fraud was detected,” the indictment said.
Rustamov is a wanted man, and officials believe he’s on the run. Special agent Robb R. Breeden said the agency will “pursue those who attempt to exploit federal health care programs — no matter where they attempt to hide.”
If convicted, Rustomov faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 for each violation.
“When the Administration declared a War on Fraud, it meant to target exactly this kind of conduct. Rustamov participated in a scheme to steal nearly $100 million in taxpayer funds from a program intended to help those who truly need medical care,” said United States Attorney Craig H. Missakian
Quote:The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is facing backlash after its West Hollywood Station posted a since-deleted video showing cops running past Stop Signs that were altered to read “Stop Ice.”
While individual officers are allowed to hold political views, law enforcement agencies are intended to be non-partisan.
The opening shot of the video prominently features a “Stop Ice” sign in front of a sunrise.
In the clip, several officers are seen running down the street past the political message, before posing next to a cop car with the title “West Hollywood Station.”
The LASD confirmed to the California Post that the West Hollywood Station posted the video, which was later deleted.
The Post is waiting for a statement on whether the station was aware of the anti-ICE signs prior to posting the video, and the decision for taking it down.
Users on social media called out the Sheriff’s Department for “straight slipping,” with one person declaring it was “not an accident.”
Quote:A civil jury in California on Monday found that Bill Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted a woman in 1972, awarding her $19.25 million in damages in another major legal setback for the once‑celebrated entertainer.
After a nearly two‑week trial in Santa Monica, jurors found the 88‑year‑old Cosby liable for the sexual battery and assault of Donna Motsinger. The panel deliberated for just over a day before reaching its verdict.
Jurors awarded $17.5 million in past damages and $1.75 million in future damages, covering mental suffering, emotional distress, loss of enjoyment of life, grief, anxiety and humiliation. A separate punitive‑damages phase of the trial is scheduled to begin later.
Defense plans to appeal
Cosby’s attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, said in an email that the defense was disappointed by the verdict and intends to appeal.
In court filings and arguments, Cosby’s lawyers said Motsinger’s claims relied on speculation and assumption, arguing she had no direct memory of the alleged assault and that any encounter, if it occurred, was consensual. Cosby did not testify at the trial.
Allegations date back more than 50 years
Motsinger, who had been a server at a restaurant in Sausalito near San Francisco, said Cosby invited her to one of his stand‑up comedy shows at a theater in nearby San Carlos in 1972. Both were in their 30s at the time.
In her lawsuit, filed in 2023, Motsinger said Cosby gave her wine and two pills she believed were aspirin. She said she began losing consciousness and remembered flashes of light as two men placed her in a limousine.
She later awoke at her home partially undressed, the lawsuit said, believing she had been drugged and raped. Motsinger has said the incident caused decades of emotional trauma.
Quote:California is being investigated by a powerful congressional committee after the Post exposed rampant hospice fraud that’s cost taxpayers more than $100 million.
The House Oversight Committee sent shockwaves across the Golden State on Monday after launching the bombshell probe into widespread Medicare fraud on the West Coast.
The investigation comes off the back of the Post’s revelations multiple “ghost” hospices were allegedly billing the government while operating from buildings that have been abandoned for years.
The secret network included empty storefronts, auto parts shops and other offices that were not in use, while other addresses did not exist at all.
The Republican-led House Oversight Committee demanded all documents and communications relating to audits and oversight of federally-funded hospice programs be handed over.
Chair James Comer sent a damning letter to Governor Gavin Newsom, claiming the state has a “well-documented history of fraud in its hospice programs” and estimated the total amount at over $105 million.
The letter said: “Recent reporting has revealed alarming evidence of fraudulent activity in California’s hospice programs, including agencies overbilling Medicare and fraudulently enrolling beneficiaries without their knowledge.”
It added: “The Committee is concerned your administration does not have sufficient internal controls to prevent and detect fraud and is not conducting proper oversight of these hospice programs.
“As a result, Americans across the country are paying for California’s rampant hospice fraud and vulnerable patients are being exploited.”
Quote:A massive explosion at a Texas crude oil refinery shot up towering plumes of dark smoke and physically shook locals’ homes before they were ordered to shelter in place Monday.
A loud boom resounded throughout the western part of Port Arthur, Texas on Monday afternoon when part of a Valero refinery exploded, local outlets reported.
Clouds of black smoke spilled out of the refinery, sparking health concerns among residents and forcing city officials to put out a shelter-in-place order for the west end.
One resident at the scene told 12News that the entire area reeked of rotten eggs — a smell commonly associated with sulfur.
Others told the outlet that the explosion rattled their homes and vehicles.
Jefferson County Sheriff Zena Stephens suggested that the explosion may be linked to a mishap with a heating unit at the refinery, the outlet reported.
Officials monitored the air quality in the area throughout the day as the smoke from the refinery blanketed the sky.
No injuries were reported as of Monday evening. A representative for the Valero Energy Corporation told The Post that all personnel at the refinery were accounted for.
The Valero Port Arthur Refinery sits near the Texas Gulf coast and along the Texas-Louisiana border. The facility employs roughly 770 workers and is responsible for producing upwards of 435,000 barrels of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel daily.
Locals who felt the tremors caused by the explosion were shocked that officials didn’t move to evacuate the city.
Quote:Shocking video shows the aftermath of a mass stabbing in a trendy downtown Los Angeles restaurant that sent four women to the hospital — and left another with a slashed face.
An all-female group was finishing brunch at the lounge and restaurant Zaya around 5 p.m. Sunday when a vicious fight broke out over who would pick up the check, according to FOX 11.
As the terrifying fight escalated, one woman whipped out a folding knife and another snatched a bottle. The crazed diners then cut each other to pieces.
Two women were arrested for assault with a deadly weapon. 29-year-old Dara Newsome and 26-year-old Kumiko Howard were taken into custody over the wild brawl.
“At this time, we are cooperating fully with law enforcement and cannot comment on unconfirmed details while the matter is being handled, Ryan Sauter, owner of Zaya, told the Post. “Our focus remains on the safety of our guests and staff.”
New video exclusively obtained by The Post shows the suspects fleeing the restaurant as screams can be heard in the distance.
“Cynthia, come on!,” shouts one of the women to another in the stunning video taken from a security camera at a luxury apartment down the street from the restaurant.
“Come on baby,” calls another, as the women clad in miniskirts hustle away from the restaurant.
The video shows a woman in with a red ponytail clutching what appeared to be an injury on her arm. She then appears to wipe a liquid from her other arm.
A spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department said the suspect who wielded a folding knife in the brawl had a red ponytail.
A victim in the wild fight who suffered cuts to her face refused medical treatment and left the restaurant on her own, according to a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.
A security guard at a neighboring building told the California Post, “I saw the people leaving. There were five or six people, women and men, with blood on them. The cops took a while to arrive. The stabbing took place in the restaurant. It’s incredible that this happened on a Sunday at a fancy restaurant.”
Quote:The man charged in a 2023 shooting that killed a pregnant Seattle woman and her unborn baby has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.
Cordell Goosby was charged with first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder in the death of 34-year-old Eina Kwon and the shooting of her husband, Sung Kwon, who was also injured.
Eina Kwon and her husband were on their way to work at their Japanese restaurant, Aburiya Bento House, on June 13, 2023, when they stopped at a red light at an intersection around 11:15 a.m.
Goosby allegedly sprinted toward the driver’s side window of their white Tesla with a gun raised.
“In a short span of time, he fired a gun in the victim’s car window, striking the victims inside the car. After firing all the bullets he had in the gun into the victims’ car, he turned and ran from the scene,” prosecutors wrote in court papers, noting that Goosby got rid of the weapon. “The defendant’s actions left a family and community shattered.”
Officers later located Goosby, who put his hands in the air and said, “I did it! I did it!” according to court documents.
Then-Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell described the broad daylight shooting as an “unimaginable tragedy.”
Goosby was prohibited from owning a firearm due to his criminal record in Illinois. He allegedly used a stolen gun during the shooting, officials said.
Fox 13 reported that the King County court system said a not-guilty-by-reason-of-insanity ruling means Goosby “admits that he committed the crimes and agrees to commitment in a state psychiatric hospital.”
Experts for both the defense and prosecution evaluated Goosby and determined he was legally insane at the time of the shooting, leading the court to permit the plea, the outlet reported.
Goosby’s future release would depend on approval from multiple state and court entities, the station added.
Quote:An Air Canada passenger plane smashed into a rescue truck at New York’s LaGuardia Airport late Sunday — killing two pilots and hospitalizing 41 others in the horrific crash that obliterated the front of the jet and forced the major travel hub to close for most of Monday.
The Bombardier CRJ-900 jet landing from Montreal with 72 passengers and four crew members was landing shortly before midnight when it smashed into the truck responding to an unrelated emergency.
Audio caught an air traffic controller frantically trying to avoid the deadly smash, repeatedly crying out, “Stop, stop, stop, stop!”
He was later heard admitting, “I messed up.”
Horrific images showed the front of the commuter plane obliterated and tilted up in the air, with debris and cables hanging from the mangled cockpit after the 24 mph smash.
The pilot and co-pilot in the mangled front were both killed, sources told The Post, with many of the 72 passengers and four crew members on the landing jet also injured. No identities have yet been released.
The 41 hospitalized included two cops on the rescue truck.
The pair, who work on the Port Authority Police Department’s Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighter Unit, which is staffed by police to respond to aircraft emergencies, suffered broken bones and are expected to survive, sources said.
They had been responding to a United Airlines flight that declared an emergency after a strong odor turned on warning lights and left the crew feeling sick, according to reports.
A female flight attendant was also thrown through the front of the plane while still in her seat — and survived. Port Authority cops helped rescue her, and she was brought to the hospital, sources added.
Kathryn Garcia, the Port Authority Executive Director, told reporters that of 41 people taken to the hospital, 32 have since been released.
She revealed some were “seriously injured” but didn’t provide an exact number.
The Air Canada flight was carrying a group of Orthodox Jews from the New York area, sources told The Post.
Quote:A ground stop was issued at Newark Airport Monday morning after the air traffic control tower was evacuated due to smoke — just hours following the shutdown at LaGuardia Airport because of a fatal plane crash.
Air traffic controllers are being moved to a backup facility on site at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey after a burning smell was detected, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
“Arrivals and departures are temporarily paused at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey after air traffic controllers evacuated the tower because of a burning smell coming from an elevator,” the FAA said in a statement.
The ground stop was scheduled to last until at least 8:30 a.m., roughly an hour after it started, but the delays caused by the incident are likely to mean more travel woe for passengers in the New York area.
Passengers at airports across the country have been subjected to hours-long security delays because of the ongoing Transportation Security Administration shutdown.
Two pilots were killed late Sunday at LaGuardia Airport in Queens when an Air Canada-operated flight collided with a fire truck on the runway. The airport will be closed until at least Monday afternoon.

Quote:Ambulances belonging to a Jewish charity were set alight in what has been described by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer as a "deeply shocking antisemitic arson attack."
Images posted to social media show the blazes which targeted four vehicles belonging to Hatzola Northwest, a volunteer emergency medical response group.
At around 1.40 a.m. Monday, London Fire Brigade were called to Highfield Road in Golders Green, a district in the British capital that has a large Jewish population. Multiple gas cylinders in the vehicles exploded in the incident, smashing nearby apartment block windows and forcing the evacuation of local residents.
No one was reported injured and police are looking for three suspects seemingly caught on security camera footage wearing hoods and carrying a canister toward one of the ambulances before flames erupted around the vehicle, according to The Associated Press. As of Monday morning, there had been no arrests and the investigation is ongoing.
"My thoughts are with the Jewish community who are waking up this morning to this horrific news," Starmer said. "Antisemitism has no place in our society and it's really important that we all stand together."
Residents described how they had heard loud explosions. Peter Zinkin, who represents Golders Green on the local council, said there was a feeling of "shock and horror" as well as "a deep and overwhelming sadness," the AP reported.
Neighborhood watch group Shomrim posted on X how there had been both a criminal act of arson, as well as a "deeply concerning incident affecting a vital emergency service serving the local Jewish community."
Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis posted on X that the Hatzola ambulance service was "extraordinary," adding that its "sole mission is to protect life, Jewish and non-Jewish alike." He also said that the attack was the "most painful illustration of the ongoing battle between those who sanctify life and those who seek to destroy it."
The attack comes amid a spike in antisemitic incidents across the U.K. since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in late 2023. The Community Security Trust, which works to protect the Jewish community, recorded 3,700 antisemitic incidents in 2025, which was more than double the 1,662 recorded in 2022.
In October 2025, an attacker drove his car into people who were outside a Manchester synagogue during the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. The attacker stabbed one person to death and then another died after being inadvertently shot by police. Three people were seriously wounded.
Quote:The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party more than doubled its share of the vote in a state election in the west of the country, underscoring its national popularity outside its eastern heartlands.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz’ ruling conservatives, the Christian Democratic Union, won the ballot in the western state of Rhineland-Palatinate with 30 percent of the vote, dislodging the centre-left Social Democrats party which received 26 percent of the votes.
CDU candidate Gordon Schnieder, who had campaigned with Merz, claimed victory and vowed to change the state's education, security, health and economic policy.
The results mark a blow to the Socialist Democrats which had previously held the state for 35 years.
AfD came third with 19.5 percent of the vote, more than double the result it received at the last state election five years ago when it got 8.3 percent.
But the far-right party is consistently tracking strong support in national polls, often vying for first with Merz' conservative party.
This latest strong showing comes after the AfD came third in a state election in Baden-Wurttemberg earlier March showing that it is making progress in the western part of the country.
The ballot in Rhineland-Palatinate was the second of five state races this year in what is considered a litmus test of the national sentiment as the AfD seeks to overtake Merz’s conservatives in national polls.
The AfD’s jump of more than 11 points is significant given the losses of the three governing parties (SPD, Greens, and FDP)—and the CDU and Left Party only making marginal gains.
One of its national leaders, Alice Weidel, said Sunday how the party had "achieved record results."
"Voters appreciate the work we’ve done as opposition party," she said, according to Politico. "We will continue on this path so that we can join the government in the next election."
However, the party will need to end the so-called firewall which has stopped the far right from governing in a coalition with mainstream parties at state and national level.
Quote:Environmental campaigners wanted to stop the companies from selling combustion engine cars after 2030. They argued that continuing to release high amounts of CO2 could infringe on the rights of younger generations.
Germany's Federal Court of Justice on Monday dismissed a bid by environmental campaigners to ban BMW and Mercedes Benz from selling new combustion engine cars beyond 2030.
The plaintiffs from Environmental Action Germany (Deutsche Umwelthilfe, or DUH) had argued that continuing to sell fossil fuel-powered vehicles after that date would violate the constitution and curb the rights of young people.
The case centered on the question of whether companies can be ordered to take such emissions-savings steps independently of government regulations.
What was argued in court?
The DUH case was brought by three of the organization's managing directors. They argued that the automakers were consuming a disproportionate share of global and national carbon dioxide budgets — the amount of emissions that can be released without breaching internationally agreed targets.
They said that by continuing to sell new combustion engine cars after November 2030, Mercedes Benz and BMW could infringe on the right to self-determination enshrined in Germany's constitution. According to the plaintiffs, using up this carbon budget by selling more vehicles would likely force governments to impose stricter emission-cutting measures, potentially limiting the freedoms of younger generations.
But the court ruled that there were no such emissions budgets for individual companies, with presiding Judge Stephan Seiters saying "the responsibility for climate protection legislation" was a matter for policymakers.
The plaintiffs' argument was built on alandmark 2021 ruling by Germany's Federal Constitutional Court, which required lawmakers to strengthen the country's climate protection law to protect future generations.
What were the reactions?
Barbara Metz, DUH executive director, said the organization would analyze the ruling in detail and would consider filing an appeal.
A lawyer for the group, Remo Klinger, said the court's decision provides "a very clear mandate for the legislature. It must take action."
Both Mercedes and BMW welcomed the ruling.
"Throughout the proceedings, we have consistently maintained the position that the debate over how to achieve climate targets must take place within the political process through democratically legitimized parliaments," BMW said, adding that the company "has long been making an effective contribution to climate protection."
The decision provides "legal certainty for companies operating in Germany," a company spokesperson added.
German carmakers have invested billions in the transition to electric vehicles in an effort to meet EU climate targets. The bloc had planned to phase out combustion engine cars by 2035, but the European Commission proposed weakening those rules late last year under strong pressure from the carmaker lobby.
Quote:Germany needs new talent for its labor market — and fresh ideas to ensure that foreign workers not only come, but also stay. New initiatives are now emerging to help businesses and skilled workers.
Guido Seifen is the managing director of the medium‑sized German company, Omexom Hochspannung, which employs around 500 people and builds major power lines. He said it has become increasingly difficult to find skilled workers in Germany for the widely dispersed construction sites. After all, the job often means giving up family life and a stable home during the week.
Seifen now hopes to recruit new skilled workers in Vietnam through a German‑Vietnamese development cooperation project. Vietnam is currently transitioning to renewable energy and is receiving support from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). What Germany needs are overhead line technicians — and Vietnam's electricity provider EVN has set up a dedicated training center to prepare workers for exactly that role.
Omexom wants to contribute its experience and expertise to the project. The company plans to bring EVN's Vietnamese instructors to Germany for training, enabling them to deliver instruction that meets local standards, including certification from the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce. At the training center in Vietnam, GIZ is also establishing German language courses.
In the end, enough technicians are to be trained so that roughly half of them can be offered jobs in Germany — up to 200, Seifen said, calling it a "win‑win situation."
WE‑Fair alliance for the fair recruitment of skilled workers
Attracting foreign skilled workers to Germany while at the same time strengthening training structures and transferring knowledge in their countries of origin — these are the kinds of projects the federal government aims to support.
The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) already works with many partners to train skilled workers, and now German industry is expected to join. The newly established alliance is called the "WE‑Fair alliance for the fair recruitment of skilled workers."
"Germany needs qualified skilled workers," said Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan at the launch in Berlin. The country is aging rapidly. "The projections are clear: more than 20% of employees in Germany are at least 55 years old, and will retire within the next 10 years."
Demographic researchers have calculated that Germany will need 400,000 foreign skilled workers each year over the next decade to fill the gaps. To reach that number, around 1.6 million people would have to immigrate to Germany annually.
Quote:With Italian voters rejecting the judicial reform pushed by Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the far-right leader lamented the "lost chance" to modernize the country.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's proposal to reform the Italy's judiciary is set to fail at the ballot box, according to projections published on Monday evening.
Some 54% of voters rejected the initiative, with 46% backing the legal changes championed by Meloni's right-wing government.
Meloni conceded defeat in an online post, lamenting the outcome as "a lost chance to modernize Italy" while also pledging to respect the decision.
She also promised to "continue, with seriousness and determination, to work for the good of the nation and to honor the mandate entrusted to us."
Still, the outcome marks a serious blow to Meloni and her allies, who have maintained a stable ruling coalition since 2022.
What was Meloni's reform about?
The proposed reform was focused on separating career paths of judges and prosecutors, preventing them from moving from one role to another. Another pillar of the proposal was splitting the existing Superior Council of the Judiciary into two separate oversight bodies, where members would be drawn by lots instead of voted in by their peers and lawmakers. It also foresaw a new 15-member disciplinary body.
Ahead of the vote, which was held on Sunday and Monday, Meloni's Justice Minister Carlo Nordio said the reform would fix the "para-Mafia mechanism" operating among judges.
Quote:Missing University of Alabama student James Gracey’s phone was found when Spanish police busted someone, his family said in an alarming update.
Gracey, 20, was last seen around 3 a.m. Tuesday on security footage leaving a popular Barcelona nightclub with an unidentified person after a night out with his fraternity brothers.
Police recovered his phone during the arrest of another individual, Noreen Heron, a family spokesperson, told Fox News, without making clear if the bust was directly related to the spring breaker’s disappearance.
“We don’t know whether [the phone] was lost, stolen, whatever,” the 20-year-old’s aunt Beth O’Reilly told NewsNation.
“Beyond that, we don’t have a lot of additional information right now.”
Law enforcement sources in Barcelona declined to reveal any details to Fox News on the suspect arrested in possession of Gracey’s phone or if the arrest was directly tied to the ongoing hunt.
However, investigators are looking through the phone’s location history to trace Gracey’s movements after he left the nightclub.
Gracey, from West Elmhurst, Ill., vanished hours after he flew into Barcelona from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on Monday, where he had spent the previous weekend.
He was separated from his friends after going out to the hip club Shôko — but never made it back to his Airbnb in Ronda de Sant Pere some two miles away.
Foul play is suspected in Gracey’s disappearance after security footage revealed him leaving the club with a stranger.
Cavin McLay, president of the Theta Chi fraternity where Gracey served as a chaplain, told “Fox & Friends” Thursday morning that if he could speak to his brother right now, he’d tell him to “keep fighting.”
“We’re not going to give up. We’re going to keep looking for him, and we’re waiting for him to come to us safe.”
Quote:The European Union and Australia have agreed on a sweeping new trade deal, compromising to boost exports in the face of global uncertainty over trade.
Australia and the European Union agreed on a new trade deal after eight years of negotiations.
EU chief Ursula von der Leyen and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the agreement at a ceremony in the Australian capital, Canberra.
It is the latest trade accord signed by the EU in a push to diversify trade as Europe faces challenges from the United States and China.
Albanese and von der Leyen also agreed on a security and defense partnership.
"The EU and Australia may be geographically far apart but we couldn't closer in terms of how we see the world," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said after meeting Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Canberra.
"With these dynamic new partnerships on security and defense, as well as trade, we are moving even closer together."
Albanese called the deal a "significant moment" for Australia.
The European Union is Australia's third-largest two-way trading partner and second-largest source of foreign investment.
What is in the new EU-Australia trade deal?
The agreement will remove over 99% of tariffs on EU goods exports to Australia, according to AFP news agency, cutting €1 billion ($1.16 billion) a year in duties for companies.
Australian tariffs will drop to zero for wine, sparkling wine, fruit and vegetables and chocolates from day one and for cheeses over three years.
European car makers will benefit from Australia raising the threshold for its luxury car tax on electric vehicles, with three-quarters of EVs will now becoming exempt.
Australia will also lower tariffs on imports of critical minerals.
The deal could see EU exports to Australia increase by 33% over the next decade, according to a European Commission press release, with daily, motor vehicles and chemicals seeing the strongest growth.
Key sticking points on access to the EU market for Australian beef were overcome to reach the deal.
For beef, the EU will open two tariff rate quotas of a total of 30,600 tons. This includes 55% percent of grass-fed beef entering duty free, while 45% will enter with a reduced duty of 7.5%.
However, this will be phased in over five years to protect EU farmers.

Quote:A Colombian military cargo plane crashed Monday in the country’s southern Amazon region while carrying about 110 soldiers, authorities said.
At least one person was killed and 77 people were injured in the crash, officials said.
Plane Crash in Colombia: What We Know
The Lockheed Martin C‑130 Hercules aircraft went down shortly after taking off from Puerto Leguízamo, a remote municipality in the Putumayo department near Colombia’s borders with Peru and Ecuador, according to the Defense Ministry. Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez said rescue teams were dispatched to the crash site and that the cause of the accident was under investigation.
"I express my most sincere condolences to the families of those affected and, in respect for their pain, I call for avoiding speculation until official information is available," Sánchez said in a statement on X. "This is a deeply painful event for the country."
In total, 125 people were on board the plane at the time, including 114 passengers and 11 crew members, according to General Carlos Fernando Silva, commander of the Columbian air force. In a separate statement, the air force said at least 77 people were rescued from the crash site with injuries. Rescue efforts were continuing, and the plane had been transporting 110 soldiers to another city in Putumayo province, according to the air force.
“At this moment we do not know details” of the crash, Silva said. “Except that the plane had a problem and went down about two kilometers from the airport.” He said two planes, with 74 beds, had been sent to the area to fly the injured back to hospitals in Bogota and elsewhere.
Images shared by Colombian media showed a large plume of smoke rising from a field near the crash site as military units rushed to the area. President Gustavo Petro said authorities were focused on emergency response efforts as information continued to emerge.
Images shared online by local media outlets show a black cloud of smoke rising from a field where the plane crashed, and a truck with soldiers rushing to the site.
Colombia President Gustavo Petro Responds to Crash
Colombian President Gustavo Petro responded to the crash on X, writing that military modernization has been a priority of his presidency but has faced "bureaucratic difficulties."
"I will not grant more time; it is the lives of the young people that are at stake," he wrote. "That is why, against wind and tide, I modernized the strategic air fleet and have requested the immediate purchase of helicopters and transport and troop aircraft to expand the transportation and troop mobility capacity in regions nearly wiped out by the failure of the Russian helicopters now vetoed."
He wrote that he hopes "we have no deaths in this horrific accident that should never have happened."
"Contrary to press reports, the military force has been losing capacity for fifteen years, and my decision has been to completely modernize its armament," he wrote.
"For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ," 1 Thessalonians 5:9
