Right now, my steam account let me open RMXP with Proton 9.0 as its compatibility layer. 
Now you can choose betwen version 7.0 and 9.0. 
And yes, I confirmed what I said earlier about FF7 and FF8.
Well, I also have the FF3 and FF4 3D editions there. Proton 7.0 or later seem to be working.
