Quote:Millions of American families will be able to begin accessing a new government-backed investment program for children on July 4.
Coinciding with the Fourth of July holiday, the Trump administration is launching so-called "Trump Accounts" and will start distributing a one-time $1,000 federal contribution to eligible participants.
The accounts were created through President Donald Trump's tax-and-spending package and are designed to give children a financial head start by investing government and private contributions in stock market index funds that can grow over time.
“The Trump Administration is taking another step forward in expanding opportunity for American families. The Trump Accounts app delivers a simple, secure way for households to begin engaging with a program designed to build long-term financial strength from day one,” said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in a statement.
“By putting easy access to Trump Accounts directly in the hands of parents and young Americans, we are helping to ensure that America’s youth are included in this new era of economic participation.”
Why It Matters
The accounts are the Trump administration's attempt to create a universal investment-based benefit for children.
The program could help narrow the wealth gap by giving every eligible child a stake in financial markets from birth. However, some worry the accounts primarily benefit families that can afford to make additional contributions and feel the resources would be better directed toward existing social programs.
What to Know: Who Gets the $1,000 Payment?
Not every child will qualify for the federal money.
According to Treasury Department guidance, the $1,000 government contribution is available only to children who:
- Were born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028.
- Are U.S. citizens.
- Have a valid Social Security number.
- Have a Trump Account opened on their behalf by a parent, guardian or other authorized adult.
Who Is Excluded?
Children born before 2025 generally do not qualify for the federal $1,000 contribution, though many can still have Trump Accounts opened in their names. Any child under age 18 with a valid Social Security number can participate in the broader program.
However, children born before January 1, 2025, will not receive the Treasury-funded $1,000 deposit. Keep in mind, though, that eligibility rules require U.S. citizenship and a work-authorized Social Security number.
Quote:Two people were killed and a third was injured after a shooting at a shopping mall in Dearborn, Michigan, on Friday afternoon, sending shoppers fleeing on the eve of the Fourth of July holiday.
Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said the violence at Fairlane Town Center began as a confrontation between two groups of young people who knew each other, before the dispute escalated into gunfire, according to The Associated Press (AP).
Police said members of both groups had handguns, and officials do not believe the shooting was random.
The shooting happened at around 1:25 p.m. local time, CBS News Detroit reported. One victim died inside the mall, while another died later at a local hospital, according to police. A third person who was shot was also taken to a hospital for treatment, per CBS.
Shahin said the victims were young men believed to be in their late teens or early 20s, it added.
Newsweek contacted the Dearborn Police Department for comment via email on Saturday morning.
Panic at the Mall, Evacuation
The gunfire prompted panic inside the mall, which was evacuated as police responded. A video posted to social media appeared to show people running from the shopping center after shots could be heard, according to AP. One person fleeing the scene was struck by a vehicle outside the mall, CBS reported.
Several people believed to be connected to the altercation were being questioned by police, but no one had been immediately taken into custody, authorities said. Shahin said there was no known motive and no evidence to suggest the shooting was related to a robbery, per CBS.
Police said there was no additional threat to the public as the investigation continued. Michigan State Police were assisting Dearborn authorities, while the mall was expected to remain closed as investigators processed the scene, reports said.
“It’s completely unacceptable. For it to happen anywhere is unacceptable,” Shahin said, according to CBS News Detroit. “The idea that it would happen in a public space, a mall, where people shop, is unconscionable. It's just unbelievable.”
Fairlane Town Center, located near Michigan Avenue and Evergreen Road, has more than 125 stores and restaurants, per AP.
Dearborn, a suburb of Detroit, has a population of more than 100,000 and sits about 9 miles west of the city.
Quote:A Chinese national was arrested Wednesday on federal charges alleging she trafficked women from Asia to work in a prostitution ring operating out of apartments in Boston.
The suspect, Zengzeng Liu, 40, also known as "Bella," was indicted June 24 by a federal grand jury in Massachusetts on four counts of recruiting or persuading individuals to travel to engage in prostitution and three counts of using interstate or foreign communications to operate a racketeering enterprise, according to an affidavit filed Wednesday by an FBI task force member.
The operation was uncovered in late 2025 after an FBI task force began investigating advertisements posted on a website known for facilitating prostitution.
...
FBI Raid
The online advertisements directed customers to apartments in the Allston and Brighton neighborhoods.
One undercover FBI agent called the phone number listed in one of the advertisements and arranged a $600 commercial sex encounter at an apartment on Gardner Street in Allston, which a neighbor complained regularly received male visitors.
A woman dressed only in her underwear answered the door, per the affidavit. After identifying themselves, the undercover agent and other task force officers entered the apartment.
Inside, investigators found a lightly furnished two-bedroom apartment. Each bedroom was said to contain a single bed covered with a white sheet, alongside bottles of lubricant and rolls of toilet paper.
Using a translation app, the woman told investigators she was originally from Japan but had first traveled to Flushing, in New York City's Queens borough, before being sent to Boston five days earlier by Zengzeng, who she knew only as the "boss." The boss had arranged for her to travel to the Gardner Street apartment, she said.
'The Boss'
Information about what were referred to as "dates" was sent through a group chat on the Chinese messaging app WeChat, she said.
After collecting money from customers, she expected to keep a percentage of the proceeds. However, Asian men regularly came to the apartment to collect the cash, which was ultimately passed on to Zengzeng, she said.
Quote:Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul, is facing hit-and-run charges after allegedly smashing his convertible into a parked car in Napa County before driving off.
Napa County Sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a hit-and-run on the 6700 block of Yount Street in Yountville, on July 3 around 2:30 p.m., according to a press release.
A witness who called 911 pointed officials in the direction of a northbound vehicle seen colliding with the rear of a parked car on the shoulder, causing major damage. The collision also pushed the parked car’s right tire up onto the curb.
The witness said the vehicle briefly stopped and then drove away.
After police tracked Pelosi down, the 86-year-old admitted to hitting something but said he wasn’t aware what he struck. He then continued driving until his vehicle, disabled from the crash, stopped working.
Police found Pelosi partially blocking the roadway in his brown convertible on Yountville Cross Road. The car had significant damage to the front right side of the vehicle.
Cops determined that alcohol was not a factor in Pelosi’s crash. Pelosi took a preliminary alcohol screening test, and it showed a blood alcohol level of 0.00 “therefore, Driving Under the Influence was ruled out,” police said.
Quote:Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul, is facing hit-and-run charges after allegedly smashing his convertible into a parked car in Napa County — the latest in a string of crashes, including one that left his brother dead decades earlier.
The 86-year-old San Francisco-based businessman, who has been married to former House speaker for more than 60 years, was also arrested for DUI after crash in Napa County in May 2022.
At the time, the then-82-year-old had been leaving a dinner in Oakville with a longtime Democratic donor when he got into a black 2021 Porsche 911 around 10 p.m. to drive six miles to his Napa Valley country house.
Pelosi was trying to cross State Route 29 when a Jeep came down the highway and hit his car. His blood alcohol content was measured at 0.082%, and he later pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor for driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury.
The New York Times reported that Pelosi also had cataract surgery in the days before that crash that could have contributed to the wreck.
Pelosi pleaded guilty in August 2022 and he was sentenced to five days in jail. He was ordered to pay $6,800 in fines and restitution, complete a DUI program and three years of probation.
In 1957, when he was 16, he flipped his sports car and killed his older brother while driving near San Mateo south of San Francisco. His brother David, 19, who was a passenger, had urged him to drive slower before the fatal incident, according to a patrolman quoted by the San Francisco Examiner.
The tragic accident occurred in the early morning hours in February 1957, when the siblings decided to take a joyride instead heading home. The car reportedly somersaulted and ended up upside-down on the shoulder of a road.
Quote:Flames erupted on the Brooklyn Bridge as fireworks were being shot from it during Macy’s July 4 display over the East River.
Video shows a plume of smoke emerging from a flaming section of the bridge as fireworks soar and burst around it Saturday night. Two other sections also appeared to burn as the pyrotechnics were being shot from the span.
“At first I thought it was supposed to happen but then I was scared it would exploded. I thought the bridge was made of wood so I was scared,” said Nearing Khoula, 24, from France, who was watching the display from the Brooklyn waterfront.
“There were four at the same time. Some extra fireworks exploded due to the fire.”
“It started as a small fire and got bigger. There was too much black smoke,” added Mohamed Shaban, 31, of Egypt.
All the fires burned out after a minute, a Post reporter observed.
A source with knowledge of the fire response said that “minor” blazes broke out on platforms installed to launch the fireworks, not on the bridge itself — and that the 143-year-old bridge remains “safe and structurally sound.”
The fire was extinguished with two engines, according to the FDNY.
Quote:The far-left, Pro-Palestinian public school teacher who said married a Gaza man to give him American citizenship should expect to be prosecuted, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services warned this week.
“These individuals should expect to be discovered and prosecuted for this illegal activity,” USCIS Spokesman Zach Kahler said after The Post exposed the woke Californian’s twisted nuptials.
CODEPINK activist and California dance teacher Laura Pinho announced in a June 16 webinar called “Challenging Zionism In Our Schools” that she married a man in Gaza in order to “equalize the playing field.”
“I have power as an American citizen. I have a passport that I was just born with, and how can I live in this world if I don’t make every effort to equalize the playing field on whatever way that I can,” she said in a webinar, first uncovered by the North American Values Institute.
A Utah County Clerk marriage record shows that Pinho, 51, married Salem S.E. Abu Amra on April 5.
Utah allows for marriages to be conducted virtually as long as both parties bring valid ID and obtain a marriage license before the ceremony.
Just one month before the couple wed, Pinho organized a GoFundMe for her future husband which claimed he was the primary caregiver of a family of five.
“His days are spent securing clean water and foraging for food for his family and helping them stay alive,” she claimed.
Quote:Nearly a dozen members of the wealthy Soros family collectively poured more than $1.6 million to Congressional candidates’ midterm campaigns so far, The Post has learned.
The donations suggest the clan’s grip on American politics extends even beyond patriarch George Soros and his son Alex, who took control of his father’s $25 billion empire ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
Topping the list of the other members of the clan was George’s son from his first marriage, Jonathan Soros and his wife Jennifer Allan Soros, who together donated $380,000 to House and Senate races all over the country.
Jonathan, 55, a Harvard law graduate who runs private investment firm One Madison Group and was snubbed as heir to the family business for his younger half-brother, met Jennifer, 56, when they were working on Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign and both have been active behind the scenes ever since.
His sister, Andrea Soros, George’s daughter from his first marriage, who just this week sold a luxurious $46 million mansion in tony West Village’s trendy West 4th Street, has also written checks to leftist candidates the tune of $26,000 so far these midterms.
Andrea, 61, whose husband Eric Colombel runs a Buddhism nonprofit empire, was named No. 2 in “top 10 richest billionaire heiresses” in 2010, with a $14 billion fortune, behind only Michael Bloomberg’s daughter Emma.
A favorite of the only Soros daughter — whose real estate portfolio also includes a sprawling house on 60 acres in Rhinebeck, NY, where Hillary and Chelsea Clinton have stayed — is potential 2028 Democratic presidential nominee Jon Ossoff, to whom she sent $14,000 so far this cycle.
Other politically influential members of the bloodline include George’s oldest son, Robert Soros and his new wife, socialite Jamie Singer Soros, who together donated $40,200.
Singer Soros, 41, who sits on the board of trustees of the Met and jet sets to Turks and Caicos, Paris and Firenze when she’s not sailing at Martha’s Vineyard or posing with Victoria Beckham, married the eldest Soros spawn in an exclusive 2020 affair at Connecticut’s famed Glass House that was featured in Vogue.
CHINA
Quote:A pastor of a prominent underground church who was detained in China in October has been released, less than two months after President Trump brought up his case when meeting Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing, his family and rights advocates said Saturday.
Pastor Ezra Jin Mingri arrived in Los Angeles and “is finally reunited with his family,” Frances Hui of the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation wrote on X.
He and 17 other leaders of the underground Zion Church were detained in October in one of China’s largest crackdowns on a single church in decades, raising worries over an escalation in the government’s curtailing of religious freedom.
A family statement said Jin’s release happened very quickly. It thanked Trump and said they know the release could not have happened without Xi’s direct intervention.
“We hope this is a signal of a positive turn for people of faith in China and relations between our two nations,” the statement said.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Jin’s case gained attention after Trump, on the way home from a state visit to Beijing in May, said he raised with Xi the detentions of both the pastor and that of imprisoned Hong Kong activist Jimmy Lai.
“He said he’s gonna strongly consider the pastor,” Trump told reporters on his flight. But, he said, Xi told him that Lai’s case “would be a tough one.”
The 78-year-old Lai, a former clothing magnate and publisher of a Hong Kong tabloid critical of Beijing, received a 20-year sentence in February.
Activists welcomed Jin’s release but also remembered other church leaders still being held.
“At least 8 members of Zion Church remain detained in China,” Maya Wang from Human Rights Watch wrote on X. “They should all be freed.”
UKRAINE WAR
Quote:Ukraine kept up its heavy drone assault on Russia, setting fire to a major oil refinery in the south, as President Vladimir Putin acknowledged for the first time on Sunday that the country was facing a “certain deficit” of fuel and vowed to strengthen protection of oil facilities and boost fuel output.
Ukraine has markedly stepped up its long-range attacks on Russian military industries and energy facilities in recent months, aiming to cut Moscow’s revenue for its invasion — now in its fifth year — and make Russians feel the consequences.
“Our ‘long-range sanctions’ reached two oil refineries in Russia,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on the Telegram messaging app on Sunday. “Each (strike) means a reduction in the resources that fuel the Russian war machine, and another step toward peace.”
The campaign has choked Russian fuel supplies, causing widespread shortages and long lines at gas stations across the country and prompting authorities in many regions to introduce fuel rationing. According to Western analysts, it has also slowed Moscow’s efforts on the battlefield, heaping pressure on the Kremlin to come to the negotiating table.
Putin says Ukrainian attacks aim to split Russian society
Speaking to a Russian state TV reporter, Putin described the Ukrainian attacks on oil refineries as an attempt to “cause a split in Russian society and force Russia to halt, even if only briefly, the advance of our troops along the line of contact, and create conditions for launching a negotiation process on terms advantageous to our adversary.”
“We will not give them that chance,” Putin said, adding that “strikes on our infrastructure, wherever they are directed, have absolutely no effect on the situation at the front, on the line of contact.”
He said for the first time that Ukraine has proposed a halt on deep strikes, arguing that Kyiv made the offer because Russian strikes deep into Ukrainian territory are more powerful and devastating.
The Russian leader added that Kyiv also offered to limit the fighting to the four regions that Russia annexed but never fully captured — Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. He rejected the proposal, arguing it would allow Ukraine to relocate its forces that are fighting Russian troops in other areas to let them focus on fending off the Russian attacks in the four southeastern regions.
Quote:Ukraine hit Moscow with a large-scale drone attack overnight, striking one of the Russian capital’s largest satellite communication centers for the second time in a week, officials said.
Kyiv fired more than 60 drones at Moscow late Monday as part of a large wave of attacks over the border that saw Russia scramble to take out 419 drones across 18 regions.
The attack struck Moscow’s Dubna communication center, which sits 310 miles past the border, for yet another time.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the center served as a “reconnaissance and for coordinating the activity of Russia’s occupation contingent in Ukraine.
“Recently, our Defense Forces of Ukraine already reached four such Russian centers, not only in the Moscow region but also in the Vladimir region,” Zelensky wrote on X.
“Step by step, we are implementing our plan of long-range sanctions and making it as difficult as possible for the aggressor state to carry out its invasion operations against Ukraine and the occupation of our territories.”
Ukraine has ramped up its pressure campaign against the Kremlin this year, with drone attacks in Moscow becoming more and more common and spurring discontent among Russians over dictator Vladimir Putin’s war.
Quote:Russia’s top banker has called on Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine, warning that the four-year-old conflict is dragging the country into economic collapse.
German Gref, head of the state-controlled Sberbank, said ordinary Russians are increasingly feeling the economic effects of the war, which are being worsened by Ukrainian drone strikes on Russia’s oil refineries.
“I think we are all worried about the same thing. I don’t believe there is anyone in this country whose primary concern is anything other than an end to military hostilities as soon as possible,” Gref told state TV on Tuesday, as reported by the Moscow Times.
In the same interview, Gref warned that the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022, is wreaking havoc on the Russian economy, with soaring interest rates and fuel shortages.
“An economy simply cannot survive for a prolonged period under the weight of the extremely high real interest rates we’re seeing today,” Gref said, attacking as “completely irrational” the Russian government’s use of monetary policy to combat inflation.
“We’ve already overcooled the economy. The rate needs to come down,” he said.
Russia’s Central Bank raised its key interest rate to a two-decade high of 21% in late 2024 in the face of soaring inflation.
Although borrowing costs were lowered to 14.25% in June, Russia’s regulator recently warned it may have to keep rates elevated for longer due to a widening budget deficit and growing disruption to the domestic fuel market.
Gref, who warned in June 2025 that high interest rates and an overvalued ruble would stifle investment and GDP growth, said Tuesday that investments in Russia have already fallen by over 14% and could drop another 3% this year.
He said that falling wages and job redundancies were further crises facing the Russian economy.
This isn’t the first time Gref has clashed with Putin, a risky move in a country where many prominent critics of the regime have suffered mysterious accidents in recent years.
Last September, Putin slammed Gref’s claims that Russia’s economy was stagnating, insisting that his government was taking the right steps to combat inflation.
“Some people think that a kind of hypothermia has already set in, but lending has not stopped. Ask Gref, has lending stopped? No. The rate of growth has [only] decreased,” Putin told the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, as reported at the time by Novaya Gazeta.
Quote:Russia launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine’s capital overnight into Thursday that killed at least 13 people and injured scores as loud explosions shook Kyiv for hours.
The attack with ballistic and cruise missiles and drones damaged buildings and civilian infrastructure across the city. Many residents took shelter at metro stations after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other authorities issued the first warnings of the attack.
The attack killed 13 people in Kyiv and injured 86 more, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
Damage was recorded in 30 locations across the city, mainly residential buildings and civilian infrastructure, said Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said 20 residential buildings were damaged across the city.
The Emergency Service says it deployed nearly 500 personnel and 100 units of specialized vehicles, including a helicopter, to deal with the aftermath of the attack.
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called on Ukraine’s allies to strengthen the country’s air defenses following what he described as a “night of horror” in Kyiv, urging partners not to delay decisions on supplying air defense systems and missiles.
Writing on X, Sybiha said the death toll after the attack may rise as the rescue teams continued their work.
Russia has intensified its attacks on Kyiv in recent weeks, even as Ukraine’s own long-range drone campaign against Russian military sites and energy facilities has caused fuel shortages and disrupted supply lines inside Russia.
Sybiha rejected any attempts to justify Russian strikes as retaliation for Ukraine’s long-range attacks, saying Ukraine was exercising its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter while Russia remained the aggressor.
Klitschko urged residents of the capital to remain in shelters due to the ongoing “furious enemy attack.”
He said a paramedic in extremely critical condition was among the injured in the Shevchenkivskyi district. Ukraine’s Emergency Service says a hotel and two five-story residential buildings were damaged in the area.
Quote:Russia’s attack Thursday on Kyiv was among the deadliest of the years-long war not just because the Kremlin targeted a residential area – Moscow has added new jet-powered drones to its arsenal that are incredibly challenging to shoot down.
The fairly new feature for Russian forces was deployed in an attack that killed at least 30 people — and are too rapid for Ukraine’s mobile fire groups and can only be stopped with ground-to-air missiles or fighter jets, CNN reported.
The drones can zip at 310 miles per hour and were first spotted causing wreckage near the start of the year.
“The enemy is using them more and more frequently, and the percentage of jet-powered Shaheds in their arsenal is increasing, which depletes [our] resources,” said Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat, according to CNN.
The drone addition is among the myriad of tactical and technological options Moscow has at its disposal to “maximize civilian harm during strikes on Ukraine,” according to a US-based conflict monitor, CNN reported.
“Faster-moving drones that are harder for Ukraine to intercept will likely generate increased civilian harm, much as other strike package adaptations have in the past,” according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Ihnat also said Russia’s attack also stood out because its forces used 28 ballistic missiles out of the 77 missiles that were fired, calling it a “very, very high number,” according to CNN.
The high-tech drones, ballistic missiles and munitions rocked Kyiv throughout the night as nearly 130 buildings were damaged and residents fled underground for shelter.
Quote:Ukrainian drones crippled an oil refinery in Russia’s second-largest city of St. Petersburg in the early morning hours Saturday, as Kyiv intensified its long-range attacks hoping to force dictator Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table.
Drones were seen flying over the city in footage shared on Telegram, and loud explosions rang out around 6:30 a.m. local time.
Dozens of drones were launched over the region, according to Russian officials.
Fire raged, with thick black plumes of smoke rising from the port area, which is home to the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal — one of Russia’s largest fuel storage and export facilities, which reportedly produces roughly 250,000 barrels of petroleum products a day.
“Ukraine’s Defense Forces struck port oil infrastructure that generates revenue for Russia’s war,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky Saturday, confirming the targeted strikes on X.
Ukraine also battered the main base of Russia’s Baltic Fleet at Kronstadt, which Zelensky called “an important military target.”
“Russia has lost the Black Sea,” the Ukrainian leader claimed in another post on X Saturday. “The Ukrainian Navy has achieved what many believed was impossible.”
The attacks are part of the 40-day “pressure campaign” signed off on by Zelensky last month, tapping Ukraine’s military intelligence to unleash long-range drones strikes deep into the heart of Russia to force Putin to halt his more than four-year war.
The Russian strongman is coming under rare public criticism at home, as fuel shortages, rising inflation and military casualties cause an increasing number of people to pin the blame on Putin for his invasion of Ukraine.
