A growing number of discharged coronavirus patients in China and elsewhere are testing positive after recovering, sometimes weeks after being allowed to leave the hospital, which could make the epidemic harder to eradicate.
On Wednesday, the Osaka prefectural government in Japan said a woman working as a tour-bus guide had tested positive for the coronavirus for a second time. This followed reports in China that discharged patients throughout the country were testing positive after their release from the hospital.
Experts say there are several ways discharged patients could fall ill with the virus again. Convalescing patients might not build up enough antibodies to develop immunity to SARS-CoV-2, and are being infected again. The virus also could be “biphasic”, meaning it lies dormant before creating new symptoms.
But some of the first cases of “reinfection” in China have been attributed to testing discrepancies.
On Feb. 21, a discharged patient in the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu was readmitted 10 days after being discharged when a follow-up test came back positive.

Song Tie, vice director of the local disease control center in southern China’s Guangdong province, told a media briefing on Wednesday that as many as 14% of discharged patients in the province have tested positive again and had returned to hospitals for observation.

The first article states that health authorities are studying a possible case of coronavirus in Costa Rica. The female patient had traveled to Italy and she started feeling sick after she returned to Costa Rica. In a private hospital in Escazú, San José physicians detected some strain of coronavirus.

The second article claims the Ministry of Health refuted the rumors and insisted on being the first to admit there's any case of coronavirus if it ever reached Costa Rica. Curiously both articles mention how the ministry skipped one of the steps required to scientifically deny she had contracted the Covid-19 disease, Inciensa won't analyze any sample even if it's the only institution in the
country that's capable of properly detect the coronavirus that is worrying sick many other countries around the world.

People in my WhatsApp group have stated that we should not listen to "tabloids" that want to alarm Costa Ricans with fake reports of the Wuhan virus. Sadly the local government has not been very communicative when it was supposed to...

The governor of Washington declared a state of emergency Saturday after a man died there of COVID-19, the first such reported death in the United States. More than 50 people in a nursing facility are sick and being tested for the virus.

I guess it was a matter of time before they had to announce such a terrible event had taken place in the US.

Authorities reported that Italy’s total confirmed cases grew to 1,128, a 27% increase from 24 hours earlier. The vast majority are in three northern regions, all economically productive and among the most visited in the country : Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia Romagna.

Eight more people infected with the coronavirus died since Friday night, all of them elderly and all in the same three regions, according to civil protection authorities.

It's a sad episode in Italian history for sure.

A task force of the federal government of Germany decided last Friday to impose stricter controls at its border checks, including demanding from travellers coming from countries with a coronavirus outbreak – Italy, South Korea, Japan and Iran – to disclose their health status upon arrival.
The government also intensified checks on railways and has guided the federal police to boost border patrols, as another measure in this regard, after the number of people containing the coronavirus reached 90.

The official announcement of the German Ministry of Health might not include some of the latest confirmed cases in Germany depending on when exactly it was published.

Worldometers.info reports France has announced 100 confirmed cases, 43 are new, 2 people have deceased, 86 active cases, 12 inactive cases alias patients that have been released by hospital authorities and 8 cases in serious conditions.

A pet dog has been placed in quarantine in Hong Kong after it tested a "weak positive" for the novel coronavirus, authorities said.
The dog was handed over to the Hong Kong Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) after its owner was infected with the coronavirus, the department said in a statement.
"We're working with authorities in Hong Kong and scientists in Hong Kong who are testing ... the dog ... to understand these results and to understand where or if the dog was actually infected or if the dog picked this up from a contaminated surface, for example," Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, technical lead of the World Health Organization's Health Emergencies Program, said during a press briefing Friday.
