Al Martino, who played the wedding singer of Johnny Fontane (based on Frank Sinatra) in 'The Godfather,' died Tuesday afternoon at his childhood home. He was 82.

Starting in 1952, Martino was the chart-topping Italian-American crooner of ballads such as 'Here in My Heart,' 'Spanish Eyes,' 'Can't Help Falling in Love' and 'Volare.'

He died at his childhood home in suburban Philadelphia. Publicist Sandy Friedman says Martino died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009, in Springfield, in Delaware County.

You might be interested in knowing that "Volare" is not the original title of the song. In fact, the original version of the song was brought to the public attention (with great success) with the title "Nel blu dipinto di blu" by one of the most beloved singers here in Italy, Domenico Modugno, and then it was exported in many countries as "Volare".
