Found this googleing around. Its a tool for replacing the .ico files (and other esoteric uses) in Game.exe (and likely other exe files), so you can have a custom icon for your game.

It works under wine, but not sure how well; It does what it looks like it should, but I still retain the orange gear icon. Could a windows user confirm this for me?

So your changing the icon but it does not work, is that the problem?
I've used this program before and it worked like a charm. (I do have windows) I would suggest to look at the developers homepage, but that has been shut down. So maybe if you follow this it might work:

If all else fails, I might be able to convert it for you, tough I have not used the program in a while.

With this you can also change texts and dialogs in many (but not all) Win32PE executables. It can be used to translate Rpg Maker (with some experience with this tool you are even able to remove RM limitations and shareware restrictions).

This can do quite a bit if you're familiar with it =)
It IS most well known for the ability to change the icon tough. At least in regards with XP use.
