Man, these so-called experts on reality TV are dumb.
I was catching a bit of something called 'Storage Wars' today, and a guy spent $2100 for a forclosed/lost storage unit. Yeah, the former owner didn't pay his bills, so it went up for auction, and some guy spent over $2000 for it.
Now, yeah... The guy found $300 in old vinyl albums after finding newspaper packing material saying it was from 1991... a good twenty years ago. And finding a few pieces of stereo equipment you could call archaic did get him some money. Heck, I can't fault him for getting over $1500 for that too.
But he said 'we got a gold watch. That should be a good $500 for that' made me pretty skeptical about this guy. He had it in his hand.... right in his face... and I could see it was a freakin ROLEX! A FREAKIN' GOLD ROLEX!!!
First off... a Rolex watch isn't plated, so the sucker had to be 18K solid. They weigh a ton, so I would figure it would be a good 4oz or more solid. Probably 2 1/2+ in gold alone, and at the current value of $1700 per ounce, the gold alone is over $4000.
But dude.. it was a Rolex from 20 years ago. A Stainless Steel Presidential would sell for $3000 on up easily, depending on what model. I figure that he had a watch that (if working) would be a good $8000!!!
And he said he got 500 bucks?
*sigh* Amateurs....
