I was surprised to read that the current Japanese emperor has announced his abdication since last September, and his reign will end up on May 1st, 2019. For us living in the Western world it doesn't mean a lot, but the Japanese IT guys fear they will either work extremely hard to update their calendar system or fail to do it in time. Somehow I like we don't need to change our calendar because of any abdication or coup d'etat or referendum asking the ruler to leave for good.
