Robert E. Howard was... rather .... It's said that he would BINGE write the stories under an extremely odd threat.
His own claim appears that he was writing the stories, being dictated to him by Conan himself. Conan was standing behind him with a big honkin' axe and would slay him if he got the stories wrong!!! I'm not exactly sure if Howard was all there, of if his claim was just to promote his books.
Gotta wonder about Howard's experiences. In a 1933 Conan book, 'The God in the Bowl', he actually wrote the an entire Good-Cop/Bad-Cop Police procedural scenario with Conan being arrested and a claim that they'd get a confession of murder by the morning! Kid you not, it was a murder mystery story featuring Conan! CROM!!!
