One symptom of dementia is a depression-driven lack of appetite. At times, you can get someone to eat their meals. Other times, they refuse to even open their mouth and you wonder if intravenous feeding is an option. And the hyperactive sweet tooth that they get is obnoxious at best.
Today, my dad was on the no-food diet, refusing to eat anything unless it was ice cream. Well, he had some grapes, but they were hella sweet. Otherwise, he wanted nothing unless his sweet tooth was to be appeased.
Well, I tricked my dad... sorta. His doctor recommended he drink supplemental drinks like Boost or Ensure to help him out. Unfortunately, he hates those vehemently. So, I wondered... "What if I added a scoop of ice cream and blended it?" It came out rather ... soggy... because the ensure wasn't close to freezing point, so I took the concoction and put it in the freezer for about two hours. After that, the top was like hard ice cream with milky ice cream liquid underneath. Add a spoon and stir it up, and it's almost like a Wendy's Frosty! Add another hour, and boom! An Ensure Milkshake with 13 grams of protein!
It lasted five minutes tops!
