I've been saying USB hard drives for the win, right? SNAG IT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!
Not sure about downloading the whole OS though. If you need a new PC, it comes with the OS. So I personally wouldn't back up the old OS as it also uses drivers specific for that PC.
