the little rocks outlining, or the sprites? help me to understand what appears flat?

Everything about them, including their outlines. The rocks as a whole look flat and that could be due to outlining or even the lighting/shading of them.

oh, okay, I see, I DID remove some of the outlining, but that's to be expected when killing anything translucent and making graphics 256 colors again...
I had to weigh that back and forth a lot - translucency likes to slow the game down in lag a lot, and anti-lags seem toactually make things worse, SO.. by removing any and all translucent pixels I have a much better chance...
but yeah, with no translucency comes outlining. part of converting all graphics to index 256.

I did say I was going to start becoming more active on this site (and I do love a good screenshot thread), so here's a screen from my game:
I've been using a lot of maps from the Kaliban map pack, but this is one of the maps I made using those tilesets. A full version of the map can be seen here (I took this shot using the show map script you can use in game, which shows colored blips indicating the player and savepoint location among other things):

They are both from the same map. It's not final. I might change some details here and there.
