Well, Sakura Kakumei: Hana Saku Otome-tachi (or Sakura Revolution in English) is itself both a mobile game and an anime, a spin-off of Sakura Wars taking place some seventy years later. If fans are complaining that no Sakura Wars character were within Sakura Revolution, they're morons. The 20 year old characters from Sakura Wars would be 90 by then!
MyAnimePlanet ranks the anime it 5.7 out of 10, and AnimePlanet 3 out of 5 stars.
Its a weird thing, the Sakura Kakumei game was based on Sakura Wars, but set 70 years later, and the anime based straight on the game. Both were intended to be released at the same time. But again, the plan was it was 70 years later. The only other franchise that I know of that returned characters from a saga 70 years before was Star Trek: The Next Generation with a 137-year-old Doctor McCoy, Scott held in a 70 year long Transporter buffer, and Spock.
If they expect a Sakura Wars character to be in this anime or game...? Good luck.
But I will agree about the mechanical design. Lord knows, you have people in the anime/manga development teams dedicated to just the mecha in the anime. While aesthetics might be similar to a degree, technology would certainly change after seventy years. I mean, look at a car now and then look at a '57 Chevy. The technology would need to appear different, and keeping the style and appearance would be wrong.
