Youtube Loses Lawsuit

Whether the media moguls evolve or not... whether they even do begin to interact with a video service such as Youtube or not... is actually beside the point. As long as private citizens post media without permission (be it a song, movie, or the like.... or yours), the people who actually own the work is being harmed. The moguls may gain revenue from their own posts, but not from those they didn't. It is that piracy that should be eliminated. And personally, it should be the persons who make the posts that should be reprimanded.

I agree with MetalRenard. Once the providers and publishers and whatever start providing their stuff more freely (i.e. not "for free", but on more services), the "pirating" will go down.

Over here in NZ I get screwed over far worse than the UK. Companies decide to only release popular trite worldwide and the more interesting things are only in the US and Canada? Expect me to turn to the pirates then. LET ME GIVE YOU MY MONEY. D: I don't use pirating by choice!

I would like it if Youtube kinda... returned to being Youtube. People uploading their own media. However that doesn't mean I'd support the SOPA mentality of videos getting taken down for background music.

It seems this thread has turned from a mere news article to a discussion on how to make money off of music in the modern age. Not that I mind the new topic.

In relation to piracy, I do find it disturbing that people would rather get stuff for free than abide the law. In regards to my music, for instance, several people have downloaded my albums on Bandcamp (Name your price seems to be the way to go), and only one customer who paid for an album was not a family member. :P

There are some cases where I feel the line gets blurred, however. A LOT of '80s songs and soundtracks are no longer distributed by the copyright owners for the reason of the strange mentality among most that the '80s was the worst decade in the history of music. :P It's only thanks to YouTube that I heard Peter Gabriel's "Soft Dog", for instance, which I find especially troubling because, while the song was a B-Side, it was a B-Side by a VERY successful British artist, especially back then. Similarly, it's only thanks to the Myst IV soundtrack that I heard about another of his B-Sides: "Curtains", which was the B-Side to one of the biggest songs in his career: "Big Time". Not exactly relevant to modern music, I know, but I felt I needed to say that.
