The Grand List Of Console Role Playing Game Clichés
#11
Nothing is original. everything in art is a corruption of something else. We call it inspiration and its beautiful.
A unique way to say the same thing in of itself is art.
look at starwars. its a heros Journey cliche. The ENTIRE SERIES.
The absolute most important thing is it has its own identity. Design and characters have to be Different enough to separate themselves from just the tropes and cliches.
Note That all these Cliches come from legendary games everyone still remembers.
Partly due to people who Copied the formula but didnt give it a memorable identity to back it up.

A Notable Final fantasy 7 inspired Series' is
Xenosaga: turn based battle+Villian is related to protagonist+Villian is kookoo for cocoa puffs+Villian is Primary villian to both the good guys and the evil monster villians in the game+Turning point in villians demeanor is a result of learning about his creation+Monster creation science is a plot point.
I could also loosely connect some deaths in xenosaga as being oddly FF7 like. having both an Aries moment and the old friend of barrets suicide redemption, kind of sub-archs being present.

That series is like Namcos best rpg ever- so thats a pretty good use of old themes being reapplied.
(Also Realiens are similar to Jenovah in concept and are also related to villian. so theres that connection.the only difference is instead of a creepy mother thing- most of these realians are little girls. so it gets even more uncomfortable in places.)

Those are likely to actually be "tropes", since clichés are boring and trite, as part of their definition.
"Turning iron ore into iron swords is a hard process, for one must first dig out the rock, and melt it to refine it, then one must pour that metal into a mould, let it cool a bit, and pound on it while it cools even further. Games are no different." - Ahzoh

Well to me thats subjective. Consider any trope that is in a bad movie is a cliche and any cliche in a good movie is a trope.
Its not really important because the Heros Journey is indeed a cliche.
But its used to such effect that no one cares when its in starwars.

You don't have to reinvent the wheel to tell a good story.
I don't mind seeing any of the things in the list or even a combination of them in an RPG, as long as it's done well. Tropes and Clichés alike.

There is such a thing as TOO ununspired or TOO predictable. And it is also very possible to screw up in many other forms. Any of these can be bad, but any of these can also be utalized greatly.
The death of a beloved character for example is still painfull. It doesn't matter that other characters in other media have died at some point. If it's someone you've become attatched too, it still hurts.

Stereoptypes, however, are a diffrent matter. They are similar, but a lor harder to handle "correctly".
Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: "What! You, too? Thought I was the only one." (C.S. Lewis)
For the time you're laughing, there's nothing wrong in the world. (Colin Mochrie)

If it's funny, make sure people laugh. If it's not funny, make it funny (unless it's actually really serious). (silvercheers)

Please don't spell my name "Yamina-chan". It's all small. Thank you =D

Right. If no one used any cliches or tropes ever, no one would be able to tell any stories.

Indeed. Even attempting to create something that's tropeless is impossible.

Unless you count the Roundhay Garden Scene or something. But even that's hardly tropeless.
